There's been a lot of discussion lately about agent loops --mostly started by @steipete.

We just shipped two features in @withassist_xyz that make long running tasks / loops much easier to manage with the open models.

The first is steerability as a first-class feature, so you can guide an agent toward the best possible outcome while it's executing instead of waiting until it's finished.

The second is message queues, which let you line up a sequence of messages and tasks for the agent to work through automatically.

It's a simple way to hand off a longer workload, let the agent keep moving, and come back later to review the results.

you want to start a company.

what kind of a company should you start?

you talk to some of the the sv elite. they say you should do a “picks and shovels play” because “during the gold rush the ones who made money were the picks and shovels makers.”

completely logical. it def feels like a gold rush right now.

so you talk to some investors and they agree. you raise a seed then fire up the token forge.

then you go to market and find a different story.
it’s super competitive!

there are like a zillion other teams running the picks and shovels play.

you read about high agency and feel motivated though so you push through and convert some gold miners to your product.

then they churn. not because of your product but because they had negative margins with their customers and investors didn’t fund the next round. they died and churned. not just one but all of them.

you look for advice. the same fund that did your seed is telling you “the revenue growth from some of these companies is crazy right now”.

you scratch your head because it’s hard to see what other picks and shovels plays have gone from 0 to 10m in a months.

loveable, cursor, etc are all crazy ai growth stories. they all seem like they were selling picks and shovels.
but then you realize what you missed…they aren’t selling picks and shovels to people mining gold.

they actually are selling to non gold miners.

you think about it some more and realize the investors that backed you aren’t selling picks and shovels to gold miners either. they sell money management services.

it turns out that you are the pick and shovel play.
