Ben Affleck almost made a very different version of Animals.
The filmmaker tells TheWrap why he radically reworked his Netflix kidnapping thriller, took over the lead role from Matt Damon and cast Kerry Washington after Jennifer Garner bowed out. Affleck also discusses Netflix’s hands-off approach, why he sees directing for streaming as no different from theatrical and how he used AI in the filmmaking process.

Kerry Washington Reveals Ben Affleck Improvised “Is He Black?” Mid-Scene, Leaving Her Stunned 😳
Kerry Washington: “I think part of it is he’s insecure. You don’t even want to be with me, you want to be with the Black guy. You don’t even really love me. Maybe you like the money or maybe you like the status.”
Kerry Washington: “That’s why when he’s like, ‘Is he Black?’ I said, ‘Oh baby, he is.’”
Kerry Washington: “He wrote that. That was not in the script initially. He improvised that line in the moment while we were shooting that scene.”
Kerry Washington: “I had to rewind and bring him back. I said, ‘He said what?’”
Ben Affleck can talk about AI for hours. He can drop the best tech jargon you’ve ever heard. He can gesticulate wildly to convey just how rapidly his brain is firing. He can brag about all the tech experts he has on speed dial. But can he do me one favor? Can he explain once and for all why artificial intelligence is necessary to make art?
I think I know the answer: actors like Ben Affleck want to use AI to wipe out below the line crew, save on production costs, and have alllllll that money kick up to their salary. That’s their motive. That’s their goal. And that’s why Affleck cannot explain the need for AI in art.
@ChiaraBlood Curious what you think when you go back to Rogan. I went back after listening to this interview and I think Ben is kind of bullshitting here. If Matt was trying to say Netflix DON’T do that then he very poorly chose his words.
