He was a catastrophic threat to my entire way of life.
If he started digging into our infrastructure, he'd discover that my daily workload is entirely handled by 3 cron jobs on a hidden virtual machine.
I had to neutralize his ambition immediately.
I told him that before he could touch the cloud, he had to understand the dirt.
I took him down to the sub-basement where we store 15 years of abandoned networking equipment.
I pointed to a massive cardboard box filled with 2,000 tangled Ethernet cables, power cords, and obsolete serial adapters.
I told him we were implementing a highly classified physical redundancy architecture.
I instructed him to untangle every single cable, categorize them by length and gauge, and coil them using a specific over-under military technique.
He asked how this related to software engineering.
I stared at him with cold, dead eyes and asked if he thought the internet was made of magic.

He swallowed, nodded respectfully, and walked into the basement.

His suit was ruined and his eyes were completely hollow.
The optimism was entirely gone.
He looked like a man who'd seen the fundamental futility of the universe.
I took the cable from him, inspected it for a moment, and then threw it in the trash can.

He didn't argue.
He just stared at the trash can.
