A few friends have asked for observations on this unprecedented moment. Right or wrong, I’ll offer a few puffs of a good cigar…
Consider Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, Giorgia Meloni, et al. Women Presidents and Prime Ministers are strong, tough leaders because that’s what their jobs require. Margaret Thatcher didn’t cackle or giggle. Kamala Harris does. Kamala must pass the “serious” test. She must live up to a new and higher standard on the campaign trail. But there are a lot of YouTube videos in our political bloodstream indicating that, in any consistent way, she cannot. The first thing her campaign will do is script her every utterance. Tune up Joe Biden’s teleprompter for Kamala: It will rest not.
My dream is that one day, I will live in a nation that has moved so far beyond any possible racism or sexism that we can all say a candidate like Kamala Harris is a horrible politician and a ridiculous, unserious leader despite her race and gender -- But political correctness does not allow that now. The overly-feminine left will defend assaults on Kamala by claiming she is being attacked, not on her merits or lack of them, but because America is racist and misogynistic. God protect you from your friends. This defense will make Kamala smaller.
Underneath Biden’s unpopularity is substance: his weak leadership and failures on the border, crime, and grocery store prices. Add his Afghanistan withdrawal, emboldening China and Russia, pulling the rug from under Israel, failing to win back our hostages, painful gas prices, and more. Joe Biden has made our nation less safe, less prosperous and turned the world into a tinderbox -- and Kamala Harris inherits everything. She was there, a hapless partner in it all.
When this election started 100 years ago, 70% of voters said they wanted different candidates than the two they were offered. Now, they have a door out of that room. Now they have that third choice. If Kamala can see the future and cling to it with a good VP choice, then add a moderate, forward-looking agenda distinct from Biden’s, she will be a formidable opponent for Donald Trump. Many “I am anti-Trump but can vote for Biden” voters will return home. She could pull into the lead in some polls.
The test now for Kamala is to develop a new agenda that is more patriotic and less leftist, radical, and woke than Biden’s. How far from wokeness and Biden will the left let her go? Unencumbered by principle and “imagining what could be, unburdened by what has been,” they will let her go full Sister Souljah, mauling the leftist hands that feed her. Kamala will run as a moderate, freedom-loving, return-to-normalcy centrist and defender of the working class, a marked change from the woke and weak Joe Biden record and her own journey until this moment. The Kamala Democrats will soon knife the man they now honor. Biden was not selfless or patriotic in his resignation. Nancy Pelosi had to pull out his fingernails to force him to be selfless. What the Democrats have done to Joe Biden to push him out of this race has been brutal. It’s nothing compared to what they will do to him in the coming months. It can't be Kamala's fault, so it was Joe's.
Kamala should be expected to do well in a debate. She’ll be painted by the dominant media as the young, black woman debating the old, white, toxically masculine bully. This debate dynamic will give her an edge. If she holds her own and gives as good as she gets, she will display strength. She will display a lot of rehearsed spontaneity. Her performance will be surprising, and she will likely be declared a debate winner.
Kamala will enjoy a fundraising boom and outraise Trump for the immediate future, at least until she exposes the real Kamala on the campaign trail, returns to earth, and loses her post-coital, “I’m not Joe Biden” glow.
All the girls get prettier at closing time. The dominant media will present Kamala as a better candidate than she is because that’s what they need her to be, much like they presented Biden as mentally capable of doing his job the last few months. Other than perhaps a sacrificial lamb or two, no other serious Democrat will run against Kamala. Too much momentum is building. Therefore…
Advice to Dems: Don’t start the campaign with a lie. Don’t start with the fiction that Kamala doesn’t have this nomination in the bag and has to “earn it and win it.” Voters know that is not true. Try something closer to the truth: Say she has earned it: She’s Biden’s VP. She is the spare tire, and Biden got a flat. But Washington D’s don’t want to do that because they know Kamala and they doubt her. They know she was a DEI hire and has always been box-office poison. They don’t think she can handle the campaign or the Presidency. That’s why they want a fake “she earned” it campaign, to paint her as being stronger than they know she is. And to give themselves a chance to bail if Kamala implodes.
Advice for R’s: Don’t focus on Kamala covering up Biden’s cognitive decline. Most swing voters will give her a pass on that saying, “What else was she supposed to do?” They will see her as being loyal to her boss. The better question for Kamala now is: Does she believe Biden is mentally capable of functioning as President for the next six, long, dangerous months in the tinderbox of a world she and he have created – when he isn’t even capable of campaigning for the job? Message for Republicans: Kamala is chaos.
The geometry of this race is now different. Dems have been bleeding young people, including young black men, among whom enthusiasm for Joe Biden had fallen through the floor. Biden-Harris has been stronger than expected with older, white voters. That dynamic may now reverse. The Kamala Coalition will be more Obama-like. Donald Trump had been making progress with young, black men. I suspect Trump’s progress there has hit a wall. Trump’s expanding support among Hispanic voters should hold. The Democrat idea that “brown and black” voters are one thing is misguided. They are not.
Kamala does not need a VP who will help her carry a state. She needs a VP who will help her become a serious leader of a country. That cannot be an all-chick ticket. That cannot be a new, risky, untested Governor. She needs some experienced toxic masculinity to make her candidacy more stable and less scary. If there is a Senator with military credentials and astronaut mystique, I would expect her to go for it.
Unlike the Washington media and political establishment, most Americans’ understanding of @KamalaHarris is pliable. Her image is negative but soft. So, the urgent question in this campaign is now, “Who will be the first to define Kamala?” She will be protected and reinvented by the dominant media. All D’s see they must immediately move to embrace her and give her the de facto nomination. They can’t leave her out there naked, afraid, and undefined for her own poor skills, woke record, and the Trump campaign to destroy.
Biden has brought his tragic end upon himself. He has played his exit wrong. A selfless Joe Biden would have also stepped down from the Presidency. A gallant Joe Biden would have said, “I’m warrior. I’ve fought all my life to make this country better. I am hard-headed and do not know how to quit so I’ve thought it my duty to fight and do this job. However, I have family and lifelong friends who love me. They tell me they see something I cannot. They tell me I’ve lost a step and that it’s best for our party and our nation that I move on. To all those friends and family members, loyal all these years, who have been so brutally direct with me now, I must now say this: I know that must have been hard for you to do. But sleep well. You did the right thing. You did it for your country. I can see the tears in your eyes that this moment has come. Please know I love you and accept your judgment. I leave Washington with immense gratitude for the opportunity I’ve had to be your President and serve this country. I love you all, and most of all, I love my country.” The problem, of course, is this Joe Biden does not exist. He did not and will not step down. I suspect the deal he insisted upon to relinquish the nomination required that he be allowed to stay in office. Reports say @JoeBiden is pissed. He leaves an angry man who blames the people he should thank because he is unable to see himself in the mirror and feel responsible for his own choices.
Lastly, and most importantly, this: Whom the Gods would destroy they would first make overconfident. Trump should still be expected to win this election. He has the advantage: Life was better, and the world was safer for Americans when he was President than it has been under his opponent.
But Trump has never been closer to losing than at this moment.
