Why do so many Russians stand by Putin?
In July 2010, wildfires completely destroyed the village of Verkhnyaya Vereya in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Putin, then prime minister, came to see the ruins and speak to people who had just lost everything.
He could have offered sympathy, promised to “look into the situation” and moved on.
Instead, standing among the ashes, he made sure everyone heard him:
The village would be restored before winter.
“I promise.”
Three months later, it was. By November, the village had been rebuilt and residents were moving into their new homes.
And sometime later, Putin celebrated Christmas wearing a sweater knitted for him by one of the villagers.
Politics is full of promises. People tend to remember the ones that are kept.
Most leaders tell stories that make them look good. Putin just told one where he failed.
He recalled Russia in the early 2000s, when he was constantly traveling around the country and seeing firsthand how difficult life was. One evening, after a long workday, he was walking through the mud and autumn slush toward his car when an elderly woman approached him. She tried to tell him something, then suddenly fell to her knees and handed him a note.
Putin promised her that he would look into it. He handed the note to his aides.
And then they lost her.
More than twenty years later, he still remembers that woman and openly says: "I feel ashamed even now."
There is something deeply noble about carrying the memory of one ordinary woman with you for decades. But admitting publicly that you failed her, when it would be much easier to tell a story that makes you look good, says even more.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Watch: World Largest Helicopter lifting off a Chinook
The Mi-26 is the world's largest and most powerful helicopter, built by Russia's Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant for both military and civilian missions.
It stands as tall as a three-story building, its massive rotor diameter is comparable to the wingspan of an Airbus A320.
Its lifting capability allows it to transport troops, armored vehicles, oversized cargo, and heavy equipment that most helicopters simply can't carry. Beyond transport, the Mi-26 is also used for evacuations, firefighting, disaster relief, and other demanding missions where sheer lifting power makes all the difference.
Former CIA officer John Kiriakou dropped the scariest sleeper agent story you’ll ever hear.
The Russians (and others) take kids basically from birth, rip them from their families, and raise them in fake American towns deep in Russia. American food, American TV, perfect American accent — the whole thing.
Then they steal the identity of a dead American baby, get them a legit passport and Social Security number, and drop them into the U.S.
They live normal lives for decades — travel agent, dad, neighbor, until one day they get “activated.”A coded radio message. Or a stranger whispering in their ear on the subway:
“Report back… or I have to kill you.”
One guy turned himself in to the FBI the second his daughter was born. He couldn’t do it anymore.
This stuff is happening. How many “Americans” around you right now are actually waiting for that call?
