@davidrmunson I drop in on this hellsite for the first time in possibly years to check on n quake (~m3.x, centered basically in my hood), to find this doubly wonderful post containing the words “wife” and “daughter” from one of the kinder people I’ve met and interacted with here. Congrats! 🥳
Kimi Onoda, Minister in charge of a Society of Well-Ordered and Harmonious Coexistence with Foreign Nationals, has repeatedly declined invitations to take questions on her policies regarding foreigners in Japan from the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan.
culture shocks i had moving to america:
1) in some states your job can fire you for no reason and they don't have to tell you why
2) healthcare is tied to employment and even when you're employed you have to wait for it to kick in (you have 0 coverage for this duration)
3) your rights can be taken away at any notice. nothing seems to be protected legally.
4) the food quality is BAD - their food and safety laws are abysmal
5) lobbying... that shit is just legal bribery
6) the public education system is being gutted in favor of private schools

@GearoidReidy lol—now the system is informing me that my account is limited because I don't pay money and because I don't interact enough.
Yeah, this place simply isn't worth it anymore. Bluesky isn't what Twitter was, but it's better than this.
@GearoidReidy It's just as likely the platform is elevating the misinformation, clickbait, and LARPing accounts while suppressing experts and actual information. I know I started to use this place less after Musk took over and before the mass exodus because the timeline quality went to shit.
@peteswandering Damn. A friend from my uni days moved there to teach about 15-20 years ago and the last I saw was loving it. Hope things look up for you.
@peteswandering Oh, shoot. I’ve been away from here for so long (the place really has gone to shit) that I completely missed your move. Hope things are well.
@KintsugiStyle@hizaga Beppu does have a bit more environment than Oita, although they have better shopping and a bit more to do. I’m sure you’ve checked out some of the surrounding towns and cities. Like much of the rest of Kyushu, we have some hidden gems.
@hepomodeler Good morning from Oita. Not much wind here at the moment.
Do you have an account on Bluesky? It’s become quite active, and a growing number of people are leaving here for there. I’ve been spending less time here because it’s become too negative.
