Two things this thread left out on purpose: how to handle a drivable par 4, and why the yardage you think is your strength usually turns out to be average.

You laid up to 55 yards on the par 5 because it felt safe.
For plenty of golfers that in-between wedge is a worse shot than the full one from 95, and the expected strokes table gives you no warning.

Twenty yards of distance is worth about 0.10 strokes. Fairway to rough at the same distance is worth 0.15 to 0.20.
So the lay-up target is a piece of ground, not a number on a rangefinder. When distance and angle conflict, take the angle.
Non negotiable when I play:
• Have fun
• Pick smart targets
• Go through routine
• Review round afterward
Simple, but effective habits that have helped me.

You are standing on the tee box and thinking, "I have to hit a fairway here."
So you reach for your 3-wood instead of driver, assuming it will go straighter.
Was that the right decision?
