One of our family members (Jewish) lived in the Soviet Union after her family survived the Holocaust. We asked her if she had tips for surviving an authoritarian regime, especially if you can’t flee. We also asked her about being a dissident and staying safe. Below is her response:

Your concerns are deeply understandable. 
What you describe is a very difficult choice between safety and the ability to stay and stand up for your principles, which has been the dilemma for many generations of people living under authoritarian regimes. Living in such conditions requires both caution and inner fortitude, as well as knowledge of how to maintain your health and mental well-being in order to continue to fight for your ideals.

Here are some practical tips that may be useful in such situations:

1. Maintain networks: Find others who share your views and are willing to support each other. Small, trusted communities can be a source of information, mutual help, and protection. In the Soviet Union, many dissidents found strength and hope in such circles, associating only with those they could trust.

2. Stay Healthy: In times of crisis, maintaining physical and mental health is especially important. This includes both strengthening the immune system and developing emotional resilience skills. Psychological practices such as meditation and connecting with those who support you can help significantly. 
3.Avoid Direct Confrontation: Soviet dissidents understood that active resistance requires clear plans and a willingness to accept consequences. It is not always necessary to publicly confront the authorities; sometimes it can be more effective to strategically wait, plan, and gather strength for a more significant moment. 

Understanding historical experience suggests that those who are most vulnerable are often those who are isolated. If emigrating seems difficult, it may make sense to build connections in your local community, seek out others in the same situation, and if possible, stay in touch with them and work to survive and support each other. 

And while the dissident’s path is dangerous, history shows that even small acts of resistance matter and shape history in the long run.

EM has aligned himself with the far right Christian Nationalists and his policies on this app reflect that. Though the right is supportive of Israel, they don’t like Jews. They want the Temple to be rebuilt and Jews in Israel only because it’s part of their 2nd coming of Jesus prophecy.

“(Somewhere) Over the Rainbow” was co-written by two New York Jews, born to Russian and Lithuanian, Yiddish-speaking parents. The lyrics were penned by Yip Harburg (Isidore Hochberg) and Harold “Hyman” Arlen wrote the music.

What few people realised while listening to the iconic song, is that the music is deeply rooted in the Jewish experience.

This is perhaps the most moving song to come out of the mass exodus from Europe.

Despite the song being written for its use in “the Wizard of Oz”, it draws on the themes of the Zionist movement expressing a yearning for Zion.

In composing it, both men reached deep into their consciousness as immigrant Jews framed by the pogroms of the past and wrote an unforgettable melody with almost prophetic words.

Read the lyrics in their Jewish context and suddenly the words are no longer about wizards and Oz, but about the survival of the Jews:

The “Free Palestine” movement is not in any way interested in stopping the war in Gaza. If they were, they would have supported the Israeli’s protesting Netanyahu, they would have supported Kamala Harris, and they’d be calling on Hamas to step down and release the hostages.
What they want is the removal of all Jews from Israel, and for Judaism to not exist.
