🚴♀️🌿 World Bicycle Day 2026 Celebrated at AJCBIBG, Howrah 🌿🚴♂️
On the occasion of #WorldBicycleDay, the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (AJCBIBG), Botanical Survey of India, Howrah, organized a special Bicycle Rally under the banner of “#SUNDAYS_ON_CYCLE” on 7 June 2026, in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Manas Bhaumik, Scientist ‘F’ & Head of Office, AJCBIBG, who highlighted the significance of the Fit India Movement launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and emphasized cycling as an effective means to promote physical fitness, environmental sustainability, and healthy lifestyle practices. The rally was formally flagged off by the Head of Office.
More than 150 enthusiastic participants, including officers and staff of AJCBIBG and other BSI units located in Howrah and Kolkata, along with members of the general public, joined the event. Among the participants were Dr. K. Karthigeyan, Scientist-F & Head of Office, Central National Herbarium (CNH), and Dr. Manoj E. Hembrom, Scientist-C, Industrial Section Indian Museum (ISIM), Kolkata, who actively participated in the rally along with other officials.
The rally commenced from Gate No. 1 (Howrah Gate) of AJCBIBG, proceeded up to the Kyd Monument, and returned to the starting point after covering a distance of 2.5 km.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. S. P. Panda, Scientist ‘D’ & Curator, AJCBIBG, Howrah.

The Botanic Garden of Indian Republic (BGIR), Noida organized a plantation programme on 5 June 2026 to commemorate World Environment Day and the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign under Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
World Environment Day 2026, with the official theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, was celebrated by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Headquarters, under the guidance of the Dr. Kanad Das, Hon’ble Director, Botanical Survey of India. The programme was organized at the Central Government Staff Residential Complex, KB Block, Salt Lake City, Kolkata in collaboration with the residents of the colony.
The event commenced with the phrase “Prakriti Rakshati Rakshitah”, emphasizing the importance of protecting nature for the well-being of humanity. In his inaugural address, the Director, Botanical Survey of India, highlighted the vital role of plants in maintaining ecological balance and safeguarding the environment. He elaborated on how plants contribute to environmental protection and human welfare. The Director also stressed the importance of water conservation and drew connections with traditional knowledge and practices from the past.
Following the inaugural speech, a plantation programme was conducted with theme ”Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” in the colony park. A total of 27 saplings belonging to various plant families were planted. These included species of medicinal, fruit-bearing, timber, and avenue value, along with several endemic plants.
A notable highlight of the event was the planting of Bentinckia nicobarica, an endemic palm species native to the Nicobar Islands, by the Director himself. This symbolic plantation underscored the importance of conserving India’s unique and endemic plant diversity.
Senior Scientists Dr. J. Jyanthi, (Scientist ‘F’), Dr. S.S. Dash (Scientist ‘F’), Dr. O.N. Maurya (Scientist ‘E’), and Dr. Kumar Avinash Bharti (Scientist ‘E’) planted saplings in the name of their mothers. Other officers, including Dr. C.P. Vivek (Scientist ‘C’), Dr. Gopal Krishna (Scientist ‘C’), Dr. Sudhir Kumar Yadav (Scientist ‘B’), Sri Ranajit Kumar Roy (SAO), Sri Vikas Kumar (FO), and Sri Indrashis Banerjee (JAO), also planted saplings in the name of their mothers.
The event was witnessed by around 110 staff members and officers from the Headquarters, along with local residents. The programme was hosted by Sri Kailash Kushwaha,J.T.O.,BSI,HQ.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from residents and staff members, reflecting a shared commitment towards environmental conservation and sustainable living.

At 10:30 AM, all employees read the Preamble of the Constitution, reaffirming our commitment to the fundamental values that guide our democracy.
🌿 At 10:45 AM, a Green Pledge was administered, encouraging every employee to adopt eco-friendly actions, reduce carbon footprint, and contribute towards a greener, healthier planet.
💻 At 11:00 AM, the staff joined a webinar titled
“Constitution Day of India: Constitutional Values in Action – Rights, Duties and the Road Map to #ViksitBharat”,

📚🌿 Training for Forest Officials by the Botanical Survey of India at SFTI, Hijli,WB
The Botanical Survey of India conducted a hands-on training session on Herbarium preparation and Identification of Common Plants for more than 40 Forest Officials of the West Bengal Forest Department on 27 November 2025.
The programme, held at the State Forest Training Institute, Hijli, formed an essential part of their in-service training.
Participants enthusiastically engaged in field exercises on the collection, preservation, and identification of common plant species found in South Bengal.
Dr. Gopal Krishna, Scientist–C, and Dr. Shyam Biswa, Botanical Assistant, served as the resource persons for the training.

As part of the ongoing Swachhta Campaign 5.0, Shri Arup Kumar Bhattacharya, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), New Delhi, visited the Headquarters of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Kolkata, on 16th October 2025 to review the implementation of the campaign.
Upon his arrival, Shri Bhattacharya was warmly welcomed by the BSI team. Senior officials and staff members briefed him on the activities undertaken under the #SpecialCampaign5, highlighting the continuous efforts toward cleanliness, waste management, and digitization within the organization.
Following an interactive session, Shri Bhattacharya conducted a detailed inspection of several key sections of the headquarters, including Publication, Technical, Establishment, Administration, Stores, and Accounts. He shared valuable suggestions to enhance the working environment and workplace safety, improve storage and record management, upgrade IT infrastructure, and accelerate the process of document digitization.
Later in the day, a cleanliness drive was organized at the CGO Complex, Kolkata, focusing on the roadside footpaths connecting Central Park Metro Station to the BSI Headquarters. Shri Bhattacharya actively participated in the drive, joining the BSI team in cleaning the area — setting a remarkable example of leadership through action. His active involvement motivated all participants and reinforced the message of collective responsibility towards cleanliness in public and institutional spaces, resonating with the vision of the #SwachhBharatMission.

Result of Mega Cleaning Drive in the form of Before/After under #SwachhataHiSeva Campaign.
More than 25 tons, of garbage has been collected and handed over to Municipal corporation Howrah. This is achieved with people's participation.
