Prabhakaran is the only leader at whom you can’t throw the usual tropes about living in luxury while sending other people’s children to die in war. He made the ultimate sacrifice for Tamil liberation and both his eldest children followed in his footsteps. Here’s an excerpt from “Total Destruction of the Tamil Tigers”:

While this loud-mouthed goon may be an easy target, it’s those better disguised and more eloquent traitors that we need to watch out for. What our youths need to realize is that not every Tamil who criticizes the government is on our side. In order to present an acceptable image, they will criticize both sides but work toward the same goal as the goon. They are a small group of well-connected professors, intellectuals, activists and novelists who are united by their common masochism to sabotage their own people.

They are abetted in this enterprise by international progressive forces who platformed them during the genocide and continue to do so now, since Sinhala nationalist propaganda is acceptable as long as it comes from the lips of Tamil traitors. These same hypocrites who opposed a ceasefire in Mullivaikkal, since they hated the LTTE more than they valued Tamil lives, are now calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

But don’t be impressed by their credentials or shallow progressive rhetoric. Always dig deeper into their history and connections to know their true face.

The proposals did not even meet a small percentage of the demands and aspirations of the Tamil people. They were not taken seriously by the government, and Neelan, who wanted to leave for South Africa, left us with a useless proposal before making his exit.

Why should the LTTE engage in with a government that was insincere from the beginning?

The LTTE was not opposed to a different method; it simply wanted the three fundamentals, mandated by the Tamil people, to be respected. These were Tamil nationhood, the Tamil homeland, and the right to self-determination, something your beloved Neelan did not uphold. The LTTE was not against a federal solution; secession, as they repeatedly stated, was only a last resort. Even at the peak of its power, the LTTE did not demand a separate state but rather a pluralistic region with autonomy.

The LTTE sought a stable and permanent ceasefire, but the Sri Lankan government was only interested in a temporary, non-binding cessation of hostilities. Chandrika Kumaratunga delayed the formation of monitoring committees chaired by international experts, further undermining trust in the process. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka was actively preparing for war—expanding its military, acquiring modern weaponry, and relocating troops toward the east of Palali.

Even during the peace talks, Sri Lanka bombed areas such as the Vanni, killing LTTE commanders like Lt. Amudan, and refused to hand over his remains to the ICRC. Letters written by Ratwatte and his associates during the talks reveal clear provocations and sarcasm, demonstrating that they were never negotiating in good faith. Chandrika not only leaked confidential correspondence between her and the LTTE to the public, but also involved third parties in the peace process without arranging direct meetings with the LTTE or obtaining its consent.

Tamil guerrillas faced heavy restrictions, particularly in the Eastern Province, where military authorities imposed rigid control over security and even executed unarmed cadres. Mr. Balapatabendi specifically asked Mr. Tamilselvan to document his concerns and suggestions regarding the East. Yet when Tamilselvan responded in writing, Balapatabendi accused the LTTE of making new demands and shifting its stance—an obvious attempt to manipulate the narrative.

The LTTE also requested to meet foreign representatives of the peace committees to provide a first-hand account of the situation on the ground, particularly regarding the Tamil armed struggle. These neutral observers had been invited by both parties, and proper protocol dictated that they meet the LTTE leadership before assuming their roles as chairpersons of the monitoring committees. While the Sri Lankan government initially agreed, it deliberately delayed the meeting, further exposing its lack of sincerity.

Even before the sea battle between the Tigers and the Sri Lankan navy, the military routinely bombed Tamil areas, causing civilian casualties. Chandrika refused to lift the embargo on over 100 essential items—including printing machines, bicycles, fertilizers, and shoe polish. If Chandrika could not even control her own military, she was in no position to bring a just solution to the Tamil people. Sri Lanka not only confiscated the weapons of Tamil guerrillas but also seized their boats, crippling their mobility and resources.

It is naive to believe that Chandrika—who made racist remarks and waged a genocidal war—was ever going to bring justice to Tamils. Her election was never about achieving a just solution; it was about ending the war on the government’s terms. After six months of insincerity and deception by Chandrika and her government, the LTTE had every right to walk away from the peace talks.

The LTTE was not willing to participate while Tamils were being starved.

Chandrika also promised devolution and she actually won two elections but nothing happened. What’s your excuse for the current so-called Leftist president’s silence on federalism now that you don’t have the LTTE to blame? We aren’t opposing constitutional reform. We are simply realistic about the prospects for federalism while you keep falling for their lies.

It’s not just the elite or the fringe. The most hardcore Sinhalese nationalists from the soldiers to the settlers come from peasant background who are the majority. They aren’t interested in coexistence but dominance.

Their Tamil liberal apologists like you, Rajani, Hoole and Neelan are far more dangerous than these illiterate peasants because you give them intellectual legitimacy on international stage. Federalism was always a ruse. Majority of Sinhalese in a national referendum won’t vote for it nor will their elite be willing to devolve that much power especially now in the absence of any Tamil bargaining power.

It’s not the expats, you genius — it’s the Tamil people on the ground who have been vigorously advocating for external self-determination, which means independence.

Tamils are fighting for self-determination, and that includes external self-determination — meaning the right of a nation of people to secede.

Prabhakaran was not corrupt, which is why he is still revered to this day and was the leader of the Tamil people for three decades. He was called by the people their national leader, and to this day he is referred to as such. Prabhakaran even compromised on his people’s demand for a separate state and accepted regional autonomy and federalism at the peak of the LTTE’s power under the ISGA. This was vehemently rejected by the Sinhalese and the Sri Lankan government, because any form of power-sharing is unacceptable to the Sinhalese, who are determined to maintain a unitary state — the very issue that led to this whole ordeal in the first place.

Whether we choose to secede or to participate in a racist society and genocidal entity that killed 17% of our population is our decision — not that of some random Twitter user who is out of touch with Tamil politics and aspirations.
