Toby Keith was an avid sportsman.

And his first hit "Should've been a cowboy" was spurred from a hunting trip.

Toby went back to his hotel room and started writing.

The result was his first single and No. 1 country hit, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”

He wrote it in 20 minutes.

The single was released Feb. 12, 1993.

“One of my buddies turned and said said ‘John, you should’ve been a cowboy.’

"I thought, well, I have to write that," Toby said.

All of Toby's buddies are making fun of this poor guy.

"He comes back to the table and a young guy, about half his age, swoops in and takes her to the floor,” Keith said in this interview.

Toby was on a hunting trip with his buddies when the crew, decked out in camo, stopped in a bar in Kansas.

It was a bar where they'd filmed "Gunsmoke."

One Toby's buddies, a highway patrolman, walked up to a cowgirl in the bar & ask her to dance.

And was shot down like a duck.
