@TalithaKearey This may be totally off, but there’s a fair bit in Pliny about dabbling in lyric poetry as a specifically amateur pursuit. That said, he ends up (humorously) claiming to have aspirations of immortality thru it, which implies he sees himself as a rather good amateur.

@eeprodi I know that classicists tend to dislike such explanations as they're deemed to frivolous and vapid. Sometimes, maybe, esp. when there *is* something else to say. But we're missing something if we suppose greater significance always has to be the case.

Random question, to which I'm sure there are many answers.

Has there been work on intertextuality (spec. w. regards to classical texts) that views it in line with the "easter eggs" in modern media? It seems like a useful analogy in some respects.

@eeprodi Yes, it's a tremendous misnomer. I see at least two benefits: (i) dispensing w. the preference for readily identifiable allusions: easter eggs are often planted in a deliberately obscure fashion, e.g. often identifiable after re-watchings.

@eeprodi (ii) relaxing of the need for a reference to carry weighty interpretative value. Easter eggs (esp. in video games) are often playful in nature, designed to give the diligent (or: obsessive) reader/player something to spot and thus forge a connection between creator & consumer.
