A little advice for new econ graduate students from someone who just went through first year and did not make it. Here are the things I wish I had done:

Econ and Econ of education will always be a passion of mine, but failing out of the PhD program has not been the end of the world. You’ll find new passions and new desires. I wish everyone the best.

I thought I’d give an update since it’s been almost two years. I am happily working a private sector job with a good salary, good boss, and interesting questions. I have no idea what my end goal is, it probably won’t be a repeat PhD, but that’s okay. As long as I’m happy.

Thanks to everyone that helped me during my first year and kept Twitter a fun and exciting place. I’ll be following you guys on a personal account real soon.
Thanks everyone!

Today was potentially the last day of class for the rest of my life (assuming I don’t go back for PhD attempt #2). It’s kind of a crazy surreal feeling to be moving out of this stage of my life.

I thought failing my PhD qualifier last year would be one of the more difficult and confusing times of my life.
However, trying to navigate the job market during Covid-19 after finishing my masters degree is shaping up to be equally as confusing and difficult.
If you ever want more advice, tips, or “do-nots”, then do not hesitate to reach out. This advice was directed more towards the under-prepared student, but that comes as a function of my experience. Best of luck to you all.

I wanted nothing more than to pass my qualifiers. This is what I was (and still am) in love with and wanted to pursue with the rest of my life. However, it wasn’t in the cards for me. I know what its like to struggle, get frustrated, and cry throughout first year.

I did not end up passing all of my retakes. I’m devastated that an exam keeps me from pursuing research with faculty I admire and grad students that are (almost) all amazing.
Thanks to everyone for the advice this last year. It truly helped make the first year experience easier.
