I've been excited about this basic income pilot since 2022. We already know a UBI-like program in Indonesia reduced deforestation by 30%. This 2-year pilot will evaluate how rainforests can be saved by UBI by directly reducing Indigenous people's poverty.

US researchers found that people who got a basic income of up to $400/mo used the ER less.

Similarly, the 1970s Mincome Project found that hospitalizations dropped 8.5%. The cost of poverty on Canada's healthcare is at least $7.6B, making basic income an important investment.

These results came out yesterday too and got overshadowed. The researchers found that a small UBI ($400/mo) led to 31% fewer emergency department visits leading to hospital admission and fewer emergency department visits related to behavioral health and substance use.

This was a reply to one of my posts about universal basic income over on Mastodon. Sharing it here because it's a great reply. Yes, voucher programs like SNAP and Section8 are like being given scrip. Cash shows trust in people. Vouchers show a desire to control and limit options.

An artist with unconditional basic income would not be a hobbyist giving away their soul's work for free. They'd be empowered creators, investing more deeply in their craft because they'd be liberated from the chains of survival and would be freed to gift their art if they chose.
