It isn't bigoted to insist that people born in Scotland are Scottish and not British. "British" at best is a civic and legal category "Scottish" is the national identity of those who are born in a specific area of land or who choose to come here and help our Scottish nation grow. We have our own culture, our language is not the same English spoken south of the border, we have our own institutions and history that for the most part has been independent.
Respecting how people self-identify,  when it reflects constitutional reality, is not bigoted, it’s accurate.
