A human driver crashed their car in New York City. That car happened to be a Tesla, being driven manually.
If it was any other brand, the headline would say "A driver crashed into scaffolding". They wouldn't even mention the brand. But when it's Tesla...
Did the Tesla crash by itself or did the driver crash the car? Obviously it was the latter but ABC News is dedicated as usual to lying for clicks and narrative promotion purposes.
Here’s a lot more info about @Tesla’s new Automatic Collision Evasion feature in FSD V14.3.9, a new safety feature designed to help prevent crashes.
When a vehicle detects an imminent frontal collision:
When Model Y detects that a frontal collision is imminent and braking alone may not avoid it, Automatic Collision Evasion may engage if steering around the obstacle is more likely to avoid the collision than braking alone. Rather than braking only in a straight line (like Automatic Emergency Braking), it steers around the obstacle, braking or accelerating as needed, then continues driving. The maneuver may include changing lanes or moving onto the shoulder.
Automatic Collision Evasion is enabled whenever both Automatic Emergency Braking and FSD (Supervised) are enabled.
Automatic Collision Evasion engages when:
• Model Y detects an imminent frontal collision with another vehicle and braking alone may be insufficient to prevent it.
• Model Y is on a controlled-access highway (a divided, limited-access road with no cross traffic or at-grade intersections, such as a freeway or interstate).
• No pedestrians, cyclists, or other vulnerable road users are detected in the path of Model Y.
• Model Y is driving at less than 85 mph (137 km/h).
• FSD (Supervised) is available and enabled, is not currently active, and you are driving manually.
• The steering system is available,
• The road surface is not detected as slippery or wet.
In other collision scenarios (for example, a pedestrian or cyclist, oncoming or head-on traffic, or cross traffic), and outside the conditions above, Automatic Collision Evasion does not steer around the obstacle. Automatic Emergency Braking remains active.
While the collision is being avoided, Automatic Collision Evasion resists accidental cancellation:
• The accelerator pedal is muted.
• Pressing the brake pedal slows the vehicle but does not cancel the maneuver.
To cancel the maneuver while it is resisting cancellation, manually turn the steering wheel. Firm, deliberate steering is required to take control of Model Y. This requires more steering force than canceling FSD (Supervised) normally.
When Automatic Collision Evasion engages, Model Y sounds a chime and briefly displays a message prompting you to take over.
After the imminent collision is over, Model Y transitions to a limited, degraded FSD (Supervised) state and continues driving. In this state, FSD (Supervised) can be canceled and re-engaged as usual. Once the collision is no longer imminent, you can cancel FSD (Supervised) the same way you cancel it normally (for example, by braking or steering).
When a vehicle detects a driver who is inattentive:
Automatic Collision Evasion may also engage when Model Y detects that you are not sufficiently attentive to the road, or that FSD (Supervised) may have been unintentionally disengaged. It can engage in these situations to try to keep Model Y safe and continue driving, including when a collision may be imminent. This behavior is not limited to controlled-access highways.
Automatic Collision Evasion engages when:
• Model Y detects that you are not sufficiently attentive to the road, or that FSD (Supervised) may have been unintentionally disengaged.
• FSD (Supervised) is available and enabled, is not currently active, and you are driving manually.
• Model Y is traveling between 22.5 mph (36 km/h) and 85 mph (137 km/h).
Automatic Collision Evasion engages to keep Model Y safe and then continues driving under normal FSD (Supervised) control. Canceling works the same as canceling FSD (Supervised) normally (for example, by braking or steering).
When Automatic Collision Evasion engages, Model Y sounds a chime and briefly displays a message prompting you that FSD (Supervised) is now in control.
FSD aims to give extra space to pedestrians, cyclists, workers or cars parked on the side of the road.
A little bit of offset creates extra margin if something unexpected happens, and can make a big difference when it comes to safety

As part of the Trump Administration’s ongoing efforts to unleash American innovation and enhance safety on our roads, NHTSA is in the process of overhauling these standards. Over the last year, the agency announced it has begun working on eight rulemakings – including standards relating to brake pedals, windshield wipers, lighting, and rearview mirrors. The agency looks forward to finishing these critical updates and removing unnecessary barriers to American AV innovation in the coming months. Until that work is completed, however, existing standards remain in force.
“NHTSA fully supports the safe development and deployment of automated vehicles. But as the federal regulator, we need to ensure that all of our laws are followed,” said NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison. “Our approach of balancing innovation with safety oversight will allow the United States to maintain its global leadership in AV innovation.”
Cybercab has some pretty in-depth Grok integration, so for many actions, you never have to touch the screen. You can just use natural language to control the climate, YouTube, Music, and it will even send a notification to your phone so you can easily edit your destination.
After spending 5 hours riding in the Cybercab, here is some feedback for the Tesla team/some features I would love to see in the vehicle:
• Manual air recirculation: At one point, I was stuck in traffic behind a large, smelly gas truck spewing fumes. It would be nice to have a manual air-recirculation button on the main screen for situations like this so the smell doesn't enter the cabin.
• Full-screen map/navigation: I’d love the option to expand the map and see the Cybercab’s full route/navigation on the big screen. The small map in the top-right corner is nice, but being able to expand that would be great.
• Windshield cleaning on command: Having the ability to clean the windshield on command would be great. There were a couple of times when the windshield was pretty dirty, but the car didn’t recognize it and clean it, so I was stuck looking through some dirt and debris. Not a huge deal, and I know a lot of input is considered error, but I think it would be a nice addition. Could just enable with through Grok voice.
• Destination editing from the main screen: Having the ability to edit our destination directly from the large screen instead of requiring the phone app.
• Adjustable bottom seat cushion: I think it would be useful to give riders the ability to raise the front of the bottom seat cushion for better leg and under-thigh support. This would be especially helpful for taller passengers and, when fully reclined, would kind of create an almost zero-gravity seating position. I know this is the least realistic feature request in this list, as it adds complexity and cost with the bench seat.
• Rear camera view: Add an option to bring up the rear-facing camera on the main screen so riders can see what’s behind the vehicle similar to what the Cybertruck has.
I had a hard time coming up with a list of things because the team did such a great job thinking through everything before launch haha, but I think these few things would meaningfully add to rider satisfaction. Congrats to the whole team on the launch, it really is a fantastic vehicle and experience! Can’t wait to show my 76-year-old Mom the Cybercab when I show her Giga Texas next month for the first time.
