On suitable ground, the growing of cricket bat willows can be a quick way of capturing carbon. The logs in the photo were sets I planted in 2001 , they were recently cut to be replaced with new trees this winter. Hundreds of new bats will be made from the timber.
This time of year I also keep a tub of mealworms in the boot of my car. When I get home ,I scatter some out for the birds to feed on. Today the Robin whose been enjoying them over the last month or so has attracted another Robin to enjoy the feast
Planted with 1600 trees per hectare in 2013 our 3 acre wood is having its first proper phase of work, selecting and pruning the better trees, pollards to give space and let in light, crucial work that stops the canopy closing in and killing all vegetation plus improving tree form
Sheets being laid out today in anticipation of a good acorn harvest later this month. The seed will be picked up and used for growing on into seedlings and eventually to our oak trees of the future
@DallynLee Hi Lee , keep your cereal production going on your best ground. On your poorer areas I have had success with growing Christmas trees, cricket bat willows and Hazel for hedging stakes and heatherings, long term investment but some options can still be grazed by sheep and pigs
A few pictures highlighting the damage grey squirrels can do to young trees . The silver birch have been more bark stripped than the oak ,the oaks main leader will now die back reducing its potential timber value.
@blackgull Not to late to adjust this planting in line with current thinking. Hand may be forced to fell ash groups. Could then enrich with shade tolerant species Inc hornbeam, Yew ,Hazel etc. Pick up shelters to try and use again . Halo thin round good formed oak ,hoping for 80 ish per ha

The two cherries in the photo were planted at the same time as the oak trees behind ,an example of how species grow at different speeds. If the cherry were spread across the whole site, their growth will dominate slow growing species , shading species like oak out. #ForestryHour
