@DeidreGilley A5: I think ID plays a role in how people perceive them when it comes to relationships. It makes me sad but I think we should empower them to find the love they deserve! Any person deserves love no matter their disability! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A4: unfortunately the school system put social studies on the back burner compared to other topics. This is sad bc ALL students are not learning about their rights. It needs to be taught to students with disabilities and needs to be included in the curriculum #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A3: I think those factors affect anyone, not just those with disabilities. They are all part of who they are as a person and there are other factors that matter such as age and location. It does help greatly that their families were involved in their education. #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A2: although nothing is impossible it would be very hard to change the stigma behind an IQ score. I do not think it is an appropriate measure of intelligence at all and should be changed! (Hopefully for the better π€π») #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A1: unfortunately I was not surprised about the use of IQ testing. It broke my heart to see the way people were treated based purely off of a test. I hate how it is stigmatized in society and that they view the people as less when that is not the case! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A5: advocate! Make sure you donβt just stand by and let injustices happen. Also lead by example and show others what it means to be an advocate. #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A4: learn what they want/need out of their experience. Find their strengths and use them! Also make them feel included and treat them how you would want to be treated! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A3: start planning for transition early! Teach soft skills in the classroom as well as self advocacy and determination. Also make sure IEP goals align with what the child/family wants #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A2: some of the barriers would be lack of accessibility, accommodations in the workplace, and lack of vocational training. So many students with disabilities get little to no help when it comes to transitioning out of HS #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley Q1: I was very angry when I learned how little they make. Itβs so frustrating that employers can feel like they can take advantage of people like that! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A5: the doc did not change my mindset on disabilities, however watching them climb the steps gave me actual chills. Sad that it came to all of that to get basic rights and that theyβre still fighting #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A4: the treatment of peaceful protests now is appalling, most are met with violence or portrayed in a negative light. Back then the worst that would happen would be turning off the water but now it could be life or death #transitiontalk
@cerpa_lucy@DeidreGilley Totally agree! I loved how both groups came together in such harmony it really shows how important it is for people to work together for a cause!
@DeidreGilley A3: I loved the collaboration! It was amazing to see the groups work together. I feel like both groups are working towards similar things, respect and making the world a better and more inclusive place! #transitiontalk
@JuliaVisser12 @DeidreGilley Yes!! I loved seeing everyone free of judgment and being able to do things that normal teenagers would do! It was amazing to see
@DeidreGilley A2: the camp was so empowering because everyone there treated was treated equally. They participated together and there was no judgment. It was a βsanctuaryβ where they could truly be themselves. For once in their lives nobody was sidelined #transitiontalk
