Women in Academia | International Women's Day 2026

Professor Lynne Nakano, Chair of the Department of Japanese Studies at CUHK and Co-Director of the Gender Research Centre, is a leading scholar in contemporary Japanese society, gender, and family. She founded the Women's Empowerment through Financial Literacy (WEFL) Ambassador Programme, equipping single women and marginalized groups with financial knowledge. The Department recently received the Investor and Financial Education Award (Education) 2025 for this Impact Case.

She emphasises the important contributions of women scholars in expanding the discipline’s lens beyond male-centered perspectives in anthropology, to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of human social life. Their advancement not only improves awareness of discrimination and inequality but also facilitates solutions to address these issues.

Prof. Susanne Yuk-ping Choi, Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Gender Research Centre at CUHK, is a distinguished scholar in sociology. Through rigorous empirical research and innovative methodologies, her work explores how globalisation, digitalisation and social change are reshaping gender relations, families and social inequalities.
