SCRIPTURE, NOT CULTURE.

The Bible does not give women the office of pastor/elder over the gathered church.

Paul writes plainly:

“I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.”
— 1 Timothy 2:12

And notice the reason Paul gives. He does not appeal to first-century culture, Roman customs, or the social expectations of his time. He goes back to creation:

“For Adam was formed first, then Eve.”
— 1 Timothy 2:13

The qualifications for church elders likewise describe the office in male terms:

“The husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach.”
— 1 Timothy 3:2

This does not mean women are inferior, less gifted, or excluded from ministry.

Women served Christ faithfully. Women prayed and prophesied. Women evangelized. Women taught in appropriate contexts. Women supported the ministry of the apostles. Phoebe served the church, Priscilla helped instruct Apollos, and the daughters of Philip prophesied. Scripture gives women meaningful and honourable ministry.

But ministry is not the same thing as the office of elder/pastor.

The biblical question is not, “Can a woman be gifted enough to preach?”

The question is, “What authority and order did Christ establish for His church?”

We cannot use culture to rewrite what Scripture says, nor should we silence Scripture because its teaching conflicts with modern expectations.

The church does not determine biblical truth by what society considers acceptable.

Scripture, not culture.
Christ, not the crowd.
Truth, not trends.
