The colours in plants depend on the predominant pigments in their cells. Green leaves accumulate mostly chlorophyll while the reddish and orange colours of autumn are due to carotenoids. The flowers are often brightly coloured to attract pollinators.

The black colour of the lip facilitates its resemblance to an insect and, together with the production of aromas that imitate the insect's pheromones, they have the function of attracting pollinators.
