If I wanted to destroy a society I would create a device that fits in a pocket, decimates attention spans, convinces people things are always better somewhere else, and is believed to be indispensable.

- Ernest Hemingway, 1948 intro to A Farewell to Arms

"Armaments, universal debt, and planned obsolescence - those are the three pillars of Western prosperity. If war, waste, and moneylenders were abolished, you'd collapse." - Aldous Huxley, Island, 1962
"In proportion as our inward life fails, we go more constantly and desperately to the post office." - Henry David Thoreau, Life Without Principle, 1854
2024 update - Sub social media for post office.
"There is only one form of government that cannot produce good writers, and that system is fascism. For fascism is a lie told by bullies. A writer who will not lie cannot live and work under fascism." - Ernest Hemingway
