@GuntherEagleman I am about 100 miles from the epicenter. Local news says 7.2 magnitude. The aftershocks are ongoing, almost continuous, but luckily far less. But everything keeps shaking half an hour after the start. Praying for the people of Panama.
What looks like a “mania” is often just two groups living in different timelines at the same moment. Older ideas don’t disappear when new rules or new fashions arrive. They stick around, inherited in people’s heads and habits. So you end up with one group acting as if the new version is final and settled, and another group still living inside the older meaning that hasn’t faded yet.
When life speeds up, both sides harden. The “new” side treats its view as the official truth. The “old” side treats its view as the real world they grew up in.
Because there’s no shared moment where both can sit together and compare notes, the disagreement feels moral instead of practical. It looks like a fight over right and wrong, when really it’s just unmatched timing, two calendars trying to occupy the same year. Look to Koselleck for understanding.
@historyinmemes The inversion is that we need strong characters to make light of the world today. Humor becomes a form of resilience, not cruelty. What we laugh at still reveals us — but so does what we can laugh at.
200 years ago the establishment controlled the story because few could speak. Then democracy made meaning a public fight. NCID is the old job under a new clock; information moves too fast for meaning to stay public. You can vote, but the meaning of the vote may arrive before the vote itself. Sovereignty is a meaning system, not just a ballot.
A moving piece on euthanasia in the Netherlands. It shows how meaning drifts under speed: criteria expand, the individual shrinks, and dignity becomes procedural. No conspiracy — just group consciousness under meaning velocity. https://t.co/MIKgV09VjP
Without announcing itself, governance drifted global post 2008, creating a new backdrop to asymmetric power and Second Realities. Circulation Part 4 explains this. Editing "CIRCULATION - PART 4" - Substack
@DailyMail Same as the atom bomb in 1945, nuclear power, climate change, Covid. Every time the answer is global governance. The managerial class never miss an opportunity to immanentize the eschaton.
What happens when there are too many elites being produced? What does that mean for the asymmetric meaning system? Elite drift drives lived tensions. This is Circulation Part 3. https://t.co/dvPByvWRv8
The “can’t invent” point may be right, but it misses the structural risk. A model that only mirrors the record doesn’t stay passive, it writes the interpretive record back into the record. Meaning‑flow accelerates. Recursion increases. The canopy starts training on itself. The danger isn’t that AI fails to be the Wright Brothers. It’s that it becomes the environment in which all future meaning is produced.
We live in a moment where words are framed as violence and punishment is handed out without process. This Clifford Bates Jr. essay is a needed reminder: a just society depends on proportion, not punitiveness.

@DataRepublican Sovereignty is downstream of shared meaning. Meaning is moving into the AI model, a loop that interprets, then trains on its own output. That’s not cheaper sovereignty. That’s sovereignty changing hands.
@TCNetwork@macklemore It is perception born of external interpretation. And it is not an inalienable right that everyone must endorse that same perception.
@SBarrettBar Steven, my take is that communism is just one expression of a deeper impulse — the drive to control meaning. I unpacked this in a recent Voegelin View essay: https://t.co/3tQW3cBOAm
People like Amodei talk limits and oversight, then stay at the frontier. The restraint they want is restraint for others. That is control, not stewardship.
We’ve seen the structure. A concentrated industry plus an official gate and you get a doctrine with a letterhead — funded, staffed, and framed by the people who sell the product. Drugs and the FDA are the finished version. AI is the attempt to design the gate before the state has one.
The part that matters more than the politics is the recursive loop. AI is trained on the interpretive canopy it lives in. Once the machine inherits the canopy, the canopy starts to train itself. Regulation becomes meaning. Meaning becomes data. Data becomes the next canopy. Nobody is regulating that.
And finally, western labs live in a world or performative morality that rewards confession, letters, and regulation-talk. Chinese labs do not owe that performance, so they do not preach the same sermon. Velocity plus a Western interpretive layer produces a one-sided public story: our machines are the problem. That can be sincere and still naïve.
@Resist_CBDC Secession is what you get when a country no longer inhabits the same meanings, people, nation, fairness, who decides. When the shared story thins, the parts stop pretending they're one thing. Morality then hardens the split. I walk that mechanism here:

@beffjezos Put the regulator in charge of AI and the loop closes: interpretation trains the model, the model trains interpretation, compute becomes the substrate of meaning — and the regulator writes the ranking. I sketched that here:

The world is tribalizing. Balkanization is emerging. The structure behind it is almost invisible, unless you know where to look. Today’s Unfogged Substack connects Gurri, Lind, Kotkin and others into one synthesized explanation. https://t.co/pi6YAC6BUe
