There is an alignment between charismatic/Pentecostal churches and authoritarian or autocratic leadersโoften termed "Political Pentecostalismโ.
First, Charismatic and neo-Pentecostal churches typically operate under hierarchical, top-down structures centered on a powerful, charismatic founder or pastor (often titled Apostle or Prophet). Authority flows from direct divine revelation rather than democratic oversight or traditional boards. When translated into politics, this creates a natural affinity for strongmen. Dictators or autocratic presidents are frequently framed not as fallible politicians, but as "Godโs anointed" leaders who hold power by divine decree (often referencing Romans 13:1). Questioning the ruler's authority can be treated as resisting God's order.
Second, their focus is Prosperity. Prosperity Gospel teaches that material success, health, and status are tangible evidence of divine blessing. In this framework, a dictatorโs wealth, longevity in office, and total control over the state are viewed not as corruption or tyranny, but as proof of Godโs favor.
Many charismatic networks lack an established framework for political critique, making them particularly vulnerable to co-optation by autocrats as we see in Zimbabwe.
