Walking through the front door after a brutal shift requires a massive mental gear shift. You have to leave the hospital chaos on the porch, shake off the exhaustion, and immediately transition back into being present for the family. You do it gladly because you love them, but it takes energy.

But then there's the dog.

Pets occupy this totally different, unspoken space in your heart. They don't need you to be "on." They don't need you to explain how the shift went, solve a problem, or make a decision. They just see you, do their happy routine, and lean against your leg. It’s the purest, lowest maintenance form of decompression on earth. Sometimes, that silent, unconditional greeting is the exact anchor you need to find your footing back in the real world.
