Covid in Northern Ireland
'Weekly non-sentinel COVID-19 cases, by age group, by Epidemiological Week'
Data to Week 26, ending 28 June 2026.
1,253 SARS-CoV-2 tests were reported in Week 26. Overall test positivity decreased to 0.2%.

Our latest preprint is out, where we investigated a profound SARS-CoV-2 epidemiological anomaly: BA.3.2.2 is selectively infecting children. Here, we show that the lack of ancestral-strain immune imprinting is promoting BA.3.2.2 pediatric infections.

We’re a primary care practice in Vermont. We implemented a practice-wide protocol screening every patient at every encounter for recent SARS-CoV-2 infection history. What we’re observing in our panel is not consistent with a psychosomatic framework.
We’re seeing measurable, objective increases in new-onset hypertension, acute cardiovascular events, new-onset allergic disease, and new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus, all temporally correlated with infection history. These are not symptom reports. These are clinical findings.
New data from David Ho's lab showing that while adults & kids have ~equal antibody responses to XFG & NB.1.8.1, children have essentially no neutralizing antibodies to BA.3.2.
This seems to largely solve the BA.3.2 + kids mystery. 1/14
3 years after infection, women who had COVID have higher risk of pre-cancerous & invasive HPV-related cancers.
Invasive cancer risk increased by 67% for cervical, 131% for vaginal, 98% for vulvar, 92% for anal, & 78% for oropharyngeal cancer.

1/ 🚀 Pathoplexus now supports the Andes variant of Hantavirus (ANDV).
ANDV is the variant identified in the recent MV Hondius cases, & the Hantavirus variant previously identified as having occasional human-to-human transmission.

A clear example of this issue of unreliable test results in the first few days of symptoms is the British man who is currently in hospital in Johannesburg:
▪️24 APR: Symptoms start
▪️27 APR: 1st test ➡️ NEGATIVE
▪️2 MAY: Repeat test ➡️ POSITIVE

“WHO has also informed 12 countries whose nationals disembarked in Saint Helena.
Those 12 countries are Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.”
- @DrTedros, WHO Director General
Swiss authorities have confirmed a case of #hantavirus identified in a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship.
He had responded to an email from the ship’s operator informing the passengers of the health event, and presented himself to a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, and is receiving care.
In line with the International Health Regulations (IHR), WHO is working with relevant countries to support international contact tracing, to ensure that those potentially exposed are monitored and that any further disease spread is limited.
The type of virus in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases @nicd_sa, South Africa and the Geneva University Hospitals @hug_ge, Switzerland
The support of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar @PasteurDakar, Senegal and the Administración Nacional de Laboratorios e Institutos de Salud @ANLIS_Malbran, Argentina has also been critical in responding to this event.
As of 6 May, there are 8 cases, 3 of whom are confirmed as hantavirus by laboratory testing.
WHO will continue to work with countries to ensure that the patients, contacts, passengers and crew have the information and support they need to stay safe and prevent spread.
@WHO UPDATE: UKHSA have confirmed that British people currently on the ship will be flown home on a charter flight, probably from the Canary Islands, as long as they don’t have symptoms.
They’ll then have to self-isolate or quarantine for up to six weeks.

I think it's too early to say whether to be worried or not. Obviously this is bad news: human-to-human transmission on a cruise ship with nationals from many countries, growing number of infections, serious disease and no vaccine/therapeutic/rapid diagnostic. Next few days will show whether initial cluster is contained- or whether secondary contacts develop infection & it spreads. The long incubation periods (1-8 weeks) makes this extremely tricky to manage- also that we know that people tend to be in close contact with others- whether on flights, travel or daily life.
Andes HantaVirus, my personal take!👇
Andes hantavirus has been endemic to Argentina and Chile for decades, carried by local rodents, with occasional human cases and well documented person-to-person spread,
The current outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship (departed Ushuaia, Argentina) is serious and deserves attention, but it’s not new territory,
Caution is smart. Panic is not!
A detailed 2018–2019 investigation in a small Argentine village (34 confirmed cases from a single rodent spillover) showed this virus does have real super-spreader potential: high viral loads, droplet/aerosol transmission, and big social gatherings drove chains of person-to-person spread,
Mortality was 32 %. Yet it was contained,
If the genomic features haven’t changed, that’s exactly why an in-depth genomic mapping of this current strain is crucial right now, to confirm we’re still dealing with the known virus and not one with altered behaviour,
Crucial takeaway from that outbreak: transmission was stopped with standard public-health tools , social distancing, proper masks/PPE, contact tracing, self-quarantine, and good ventilation,
The researchers noted that every HPS case needs the same transmission precautions regardless of severity,
No extra/special measures required,
Exactly the same approach works today on the ship and anywhere else,
Ventilation, masks, and quarantine are enough. This is all well-known and should be standard practice/precaution for all airborne pathogens! #precautionaryprinciple
So, let’s stay cautious, follow the protocols, and keep perspective: this virus has been with us in South America for years.
➡️Informed caution beats fear every time!
