In 1983 a Stanford-trained MD named Stephen Phinney published a paper in the journal Metabolism that should have ended thirty years of sports nutrition orthodoxy in a single afternoon.
The conventional wisdom in 1983 was simple. Carbohydrates were the fuel of endurance athletes. Without them, performance would collapse. Every coach, every nutritionist, every sports drink company agreed.
Phinney decided to test the assumption.
He recruited five well-trained cyclists and locked them in a metabolic ward. Week one, they ate a normal high-carbohydrate diet. Then for the next four weeks they ate less than twenty grams of carbohydrate a day. Eighty-five percent of their calories came from fat. Same total energy as before. Every macro counted, every meal supervised.
He took muscle biopsies. Muscle glycogen dropped by fifty percent.
Then he sent them to ride to exhaustion.
Their average endurance time was maintained.
The body had switched fuel sources. With glucose unavailable, it had ramped up fat oxidation in the muscles. The cyclists were running on body fat instead of muscle glycogen, and they could ride just as long.
Phinney had proven, in 1983, that elite endurance performance was possible on essentially zero carbohydrate. He published the data in a peer-reviewed journal. He submitted it for the world to read.
It was buried.
The sports nutrition industry had nothing to sell to athletes who could run on their own body fat. The gel companies. The drink companies. The pasta-loading rituals. Phinney's paper was an industry-killer, so the industry ignored it.
Thirty-three years later Volek's FASTER study ran the same experiment in ultra-runners and found the same result. The athletes burned fat at twice the rate science had thought possible.
Phinney went on to co-found Virta Health and reverse type-two diabetes through nutritional ketosis.
Your body has been burning fat the whole time.
Phinney proved it in 1983. The sports drink companies still pretend he did not.

My speech from @MetRevolution
The CDC recommends that people with diabetes get 50% of their calories from carbohydrates. Meanwhile, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises that children with obesity should not be denied access to bariatric surgery or hormone injections. Yet, when it comes to lowering carbohydrates in adolescents, they mandate an extensive regimen of 20 lab tests and imaging studies.
I stand before you today not just as a physician, but as someone who has personally lived through the devastating consequences of a broken medical system… a system that has failed me, failed my family, and continues to fail millions of people every single day.
It’s time to face the facts: we are in the midst of a metabolic health crisis, and the very institutions that claim to protect our health are part of the problem.
At the age of eight, I was already on the path to obesity. By the time I became a young adult, I was burdened not just by my own weight, but by a medical system that offered nothing but empty advice. I watched as my family succumbed to diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. We went to Weight Watchers together, desperately seeking hope, while the real underlying issues were ignored. I ate the same school lunches full of processed junk and snacked on “convenient” and supposedly “healthy” foods like Lunchables.
I’ll never forget sitting in a cramped doctor’s office after waiting for hours… only to be placed on a scale and told that I was just like my family—fat. The advice I received? “Learn about calories.” But calories weren’t my issue. The real problem was understanding my hunger and the fact that I had been deprived of proper nutrition from day one.
The weight piled on until I became a 350-pound physician. My wake-up call didn’t come from the medical community, but from my own wife. She asked me to dig deep and find the solution, as I had done for everything else in medicine. So, I embarked on a ten-year mission to heal. I read 300 diet books by experts like Dr. Lustig, Dr. Teicholz, and Dr. Westman, and I pored over thousands of original research papers, trying to make sense of the USDA guidelines and the absurd recommendations from our so-called medical authorities.
What did I discover? I found that the advice to eat more starches, grains, and carbohydrates was a complete lie… not supported by the literature, not grounded in reality. These were outright lies.
At that point, I had never even cooked a steak in my life. I had no vested interest. I just wanted to heal… and I did. I lost 150 pounds, and I’ve kept it off for the last ten years with little effort. Not because of the nonsense in our dietary guidelines, but because I finally understood what true nutrition looks like.
Our experts have failed us. They continue to fail us. And it’s not just a failure of knowledge… it’s a failure of integrity.
I didn’t watch my family suffer only to sell out to pharma, supplement companies, or some veggie greens CEO. I’ve dedicated my life to exposing this failure. I’ve published ten papers. I’ve trained medical students, doctors, and coaches to understand the truth about metabolic health.
Seven years ago, I founded a nationwide telemedicine practice that has helped over 2,000 people lose nearly 100,000 pounds. Today, we partner with large companies to provide metabolic health services free to their employees. And it’s working. Manufacturing workers, truckers, fencing contractors, and lumber yard workers are all achieving incredible results… not because of a magic pill, but because we’re giving them the truth about metabolic health.
I’m honored to be here today, but let me be clear: honor alone won’t solve this problem. We need action. That’s why I serve on the board of the @TheSMHP … to ensure the next generation of doctors doesn’t remain as blind as mine was
My personal mission, and the mission of my medical practice, is simple: to end metabolic disease.
Metabolic health is a birthright
It was a wonderful day for The @MetRevolution Rally for better food in DC yesterday. There were many inspirational speeches and honors to Dr. Hallberg of @virtahealth
Attended the Rally in DC organized by the @MetRevolution - beautiful weather and people fighting for our birth right for metabolic health!
Dr. Teicholz’s efforts and book have changed so many lives.
The assumption has always been that Ancel Keys' supposed finding of an association between a country's fat intake and its rate of coronary heart disease (CHD) (Diet-Heart hypothesis) was explained by fat causing elevated blood cholesterol concentrations which then causes CHD (Lipid hypothesis). That's a great hypothesis but association does not prove causation. When these hypotheses were tested, they were disproven (for example the Women's Health Initiative - a $700 million scientific extravaganza designed to prove the Diet-Heart hypothesis for once and for all). But like all similar studies it failed https://t.co/MEWHS30ZbP.
Yet this has had zero effect on the prescription of statin drugs by the world's cardiologists.
It's type 2 diabetes that is the commonest modern cause of CHD. And type 2 diabetes is reversible with diet, not with the prescription of yet more drugs, including statins.
So statin prescription is based on an erroneous theory that is now known to be false.
Imagine a world in which the general public were actually told this. @DrAseemMalhotra@MaryanneDemasi@zoeharcombe
Our leaders will let us destroy ourselves with processed junk food and not say a word, but will throw a fit if we want a glass of raw milk without jumping through flaming hoops.
When you take out or eat in at a restaurant, the following is almost ALWAYS true (with maybe only a few exceptions):
1. They have bought the cheapest vegetables (think pesticides, glyphosate)
2. Those eggs and that meat are from factory-farmed animals— treated horribly, fed terrible unnatural food, and pumped with hormones
3. You will almost certainly be getting a high dose of pro-inflammatory refined seed oils
4. However much they say it’s Olive Oil, it’s not pure Extra Virgin Olive you’re eating
Eating and drinking out is almost always unhealthy, so only do it OCCASIONALLY for your meals.
Nothing beats your own kitchen, cooking with high quality foods. You are your own best Chef, and your Inner Chef is your best Doctor
Congrats to Nick VonderMeulen @vondernick2 on being selected Honorable Mention All CHL!! Nick leads our team in assists and is our floor general! Very proud of the work that you have put in!!
In a culture where diet and exercise fads come and go, what do you need to do to be healthy? Renowned fitness expert @VinnieTortorich offers three key behaviors that must be repeated to get and stay in shape. Anyone can do it.
