Good Fortune (🌟🌟) feels like a missed opportunity on multiple fronts. This is a totally average film. You should wait to watch this at home over streaming because I don’t believe this is good enough to warrant a trip to the theater. I will say that Good Fortune wastes a genuinely brilliant performance from Keanu Reeves, who is unquestionably the best part of this project. But it also simultaneously fails to fulfill a strong premise, which basically boils down to an unlucky broke dude trading places with a rich, extremely fortunate tech bro. Despite a good premise, strong cast & exceptional Keanu Reeves performance, Good Fortune just doesn’t meet its potential.
By the end of 2017, it felt like Aziz Ansari had the world in the palm of his hands. Fresh off Parks & Rec, Aziz exploded to a new level of fame after the success of Master of None. Season 2 of Master of None, which premiered in May of 2017, was a massive hit & catapulted Ansari to a new level of fame. But by December of 2017? A different story. Fairly or unfairly, Ansari found himself in the middle of the #MeToo movement. And the 8 years that’s since passed, we haven’t heard much from Aziz. Enter Good Fortune, a film directed, written, and starring Ansari. In other words, this film is supposed to be Ansari’s big comeback.
The problem with Ansari attempting to mount a comeback with Good Fortune is that this film isn’t well-written. As I mentioned in my opening, the premise here is interesting. It borrows some of the same brilliant DNA that we see in the 1983 classic Trading Places with Eddie Murphy. But the problem is that unlike Trading Places, the actual dialogue between characters is not funny. This is not a funny movie. I barely laughed. The theater barely laughed. Sure, the plot is solid- especially for a comedy- but there are just not many laugh-out-loud moments in this film. Keanu & Seth provide some of those moments just from their sheer charisma, but the script is this film’s ultimate weakness.
And that’s puzzling because if there’s one thing I’ve always felt about Aziz, it’s that his comedy is intelligent. His jokes - or the circumstances he comes up with that subsequently lead to jokes- are original and fresh. None of that freshness or originality is present in this film’s writing. There are so many forgettable scenes or so many moments that just feel like they’re patched in to keep the plot moving. This does not feel like a film written by a stand-up comedian in that it’s just not filled with enough punchlines, jokes, or reasons to laugh. I also might add that not only is the writing poor here from Aziz, his acting has really fallen off. His acting sticks out in comparison to Seth or Keanu & his line-delivery felt totally unnatural in this movie.
The other problem with Ansari’s attempt at a comeback with this film is not just with this film itself but his decision to accept money from the Saudis and agreeing to perform at the Riyadh Comedy Festival. Due to this very decision, much of this film’s rollout has been about Aziz’s lack of ethics instead of his attempt to complete a full comeback. I personally think Aziz & any comedian who attended the Riyadh Festival should be ashamed. Literally, hang your head in shame. It’s a decision that’s come back around to bite Aziz in the ass and really impact the release of this film. The way I see it, it’s an extremely poor decision by Ansari & he deserves whatever public criticism follows.
At day’s end, I know this sounds weird to say, but I feel bad for Keanu Reeves? I read he severely injured his knee filming the cold plunge sequence in this film, which sucks to hear considering how much of his body he’s given to cinema. Getting injured on a film like this is just totally unlucky. But beyond that, Reeves has impeccable comedic timing & delivery here. His performance has a lot of heart. Few actors have ever been able to pull off comedy & action the way Reaves can. He’s one of cinema’s crown jewels. Protect him at all costs.
That time Beyoncé and J did this after receiving a Brit award , live for all the hateful Brits and hateful uk media to see . Meghan and Harry don’t play about Beyonce’ and she doesn’t play about them . This is all love .
Respectability in dress is stupid bc it masks the issue. Such judgements are rarely about the clothes, but rather about the bodies underneath. Would Trump and Vance acted politely if Zylenskyy showed up in a suit? Unlikely. No one raised an issue with Elon in t-shirt and topcoat.
