Ist logisch. Am ersten Tag weiß ich noch gar nicht, wie es sich weiter entwickelt. Kann am nächsten Tag weg sein, oder schlimmer sein. Aber wenn ich beim Arzt bin schreibt der mich nicht nur für heute krank, sodass ich täglich wiederkomme (und dann ohne Termin stundenlang krank im Wartezimmer sitze).

Yes, he just shows it authentically, and viewed through the modern lens it is seems negative. But for his characters, here pre-Christian vikings, it actually is simply fitting and appropriate.
Eggers unlike so many others doesn't suffer from presentism. He doesn't force in some current liberal viewpoint that makes no sense for the setting.

This also fits to his werewolf interpretation, because he avoids the modern tropes, that started very late with the Wolfman movie, but are completely dominant now. In old stories werewolfs are men who transform into wolves through magic, e.g. with a magical belt they got from the devil or something like that.
