Kazakhstan is a country twice blessed: first with fabulous natural resources and then with wise leaders.

In the fall of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan neither consigned itself to being a Russian satellite state nor drifted west. It hedged carefully every step of the way, participating in Russian projects while building bilateral ties with China and western countries.

It asserted its sovereignty in significant ways. Notably it did not recognize the Russian annexation of Crimea. But it maintained neutrality, always assured Moscow it will not be a security problem and treated their ethnic Russian population with decency.

Step by step, Kazakhstan is stepping out of the dense Russian shadow it’s been under. Changing its script from Cyrillic to Latin here. A pipeline for oil to China there. It’s thriving, not as a vassal of the east or a proxy of the west, but as itself, with a diversified basket of carefully nurtured relationships.

We speak of sovereignty as something like human rights these days…something you either have or not. I think of sovereignty more like a fortune to be carefully amassed and protected. Kazakhstan did a great job of doing just that.

As we move into a more multipolar world, it pays to observe and learn from good statescraft and reject schoolyard emotions.

@arcticinstincts no good number, just observations. They seem to marry early and have more kids and take care of the family business. Only outside of Jakarta though.

My guess is the low cost of living and lack of corporate hell like Singapore, Hong kong, Seoul etc. Maids are also abundant.
