The Free Speech Union has just heard from South Wales Police that it has withdrawn its guidance on “anti-Muslim hostility”.

The force had effectively adopted its own Islamic blasphemy law, instructing officers to record any conversation that went beyond “legitimate” discussion of Islam.

Under this guidance, criticism of Islam could have been recorded as an anti-social behaviour incident and potentially appeared on DBS checks, affecting someone’s ability to work as a teacher, carer, or in other regulated professions.

South Wales Police has backed down because the Free Speech Union threatened them with a judicial review if it chose to press ahead with the policy.

The force has described this move as a “pause” to the guidance — but we think it is highly unlikely to return.

We must also thank Shadow Equalities Minister @ClaireCoutinho for referring South Wales Police to the Equality and Human Rights Commission after we brought this issue to her attention.

Blasphemy laws were abolished by Parliament 18 years ago. We must not allow them to return through the back door.

Let this be a warning to any other public body — particularly police forces — considering the adoption of its own blasphemy laws.

CONVICTED | Mason Sestanovich, 24, of #Wincobank, #Sheffield S9 – caught on CCTV beating a scared and submissive XL Bully.
Sestanovich, who’s originally from #Croydon and has links to #Clapham, is banned from keeping animals for life after being filmed carrying out a an unprovoked, prolonged assault on the defenceless dog, named Chicago.
The incident took place in the hallway of a block of flats in Hyde Park Terrace in #Sheffield on October 4, 2023. A housing manager alerted the RSPCA who visited Sestanovich at his home. Inspectors found that aside from terrorising Chicago, he was keeping her in unsuitable conditions.
An RSPCA behaviourist said: “Chicago was grabbed roughly and beaten and the dog’s body language expressed extreme fear and the violence of the man’s gestures indicates the blows were delivered to the dog with extreme violence and caused pain.”
Sestanovich said the dog was an XL Bully. Despite being told that he needed to register her to comply with the law, he refused to do so and also refused to sign her into the care of the RSPCA.
Sadly, Chicago was typed as an XL Bully when she was assessed at a rehoming centre. Despite having done nothing wrong, she therefore had to be put to sleep in accordance with government legislation.
Sestanovich pleaded guilty to inflicting blunt force trauma, physical violence and intimidatory behaviour on the dog.
Sentencing | 16 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months; 100 hours of unpaid work and 10 days of ‘rehab’; £400 in court costs plus £154 victim surcharge. Lifetime ban.

ALSATIAN DOG BRUCE SPOTTED FLOATING THREE MILES OUT TO SEA IN KAYAK AND SAVED BY HERO BOAT CREW

Bruce the Alsatian was playing in the waves at Bamburgh beach in Northumberland on Sunday afternoon when his owner put him in an inflatable kayak and swam beside him.

A sudden gust of wind dragged the kayak out to sea leaving Bruce stranded three miles offshore near the Farne Islands.

His owner raised the alarm and tried to swim after him but turned back as coastguards scrambled a lifeboat.

The two man crew of Serenity Farne Islands Boat Tours Jimmy Reid and Aaron Fordy heard the radio alert while returning from a tour spotted the dog and raced to the rescue.

During the dramatic save Bruce slipped his harness and fell into the water but Aaron grabbed him by the scruff of the neck while Jimmy hauled them both aboard.

The cold wet and shocked dog was wrapped in towels and safely returned to Seahouses Harbour for an emotional reunion with his relieved owner.

A woman has been banned from owning animals for 12 years after inspectors discovered shocking conditions inside her home, where one cat was found feeding on the remains of another after being left without proper care for an extended period.
