Everything falling apart rapidly in #Eritrea

Everything seems to be falling apart in Eritrea, particularly in Asmara. As the city's water crisis deepens, many residents are forced to buy salty water delivered by private tankers. A single barrel, when available, costs around 15 Nakfa (about US$1)—yet that water must cover drinking, cooking, bathing, washing clothes and cleaning (unaffordable to many).

The consequences are visible and unavoidable. Open sewage channels along roads emit foul odours, while toilets—even in some hotels—often cannot be properly flushed because there simply is not enough water. Prolonged electricity blackouts compound daily hardship, disrupting homes, businesses and basic services.

Medicines have also become scarce. Even common painkillers such as paracetamol are hoarded, often brought into the country by relatives returning from abroad. Having a few tablets at home has become a matter of luck rather than routine.

Yet as living conditions continue to deteriorate, the regime's appetite for confrontation and militarisation appears undiminished. For many Eritreans, the greatest threat to their country's wellbeing is not an external enemy but the policies of the self-proclaimed president, Isaias Afwerki.

Almost 32 years ago, Eritrea developed a decent macroeconomic policy that was a good fit for a post-war, low-income, coastal-state.

It was a classic East Asian Tiger growth plan: export-focused growth based in agriculture and diversified manufacturing and services.

It was to be led by strong State that mobilizes the economy without dominating it: another document which was produced the same year, the National Charter, was going to ensure the delivery of democracy, gradually, with the ruling party guiding it. That was the vision.

The reality: an Eritrea that sees democracy, guided or unguided, as a national threat and a narrow, Party-centric, State-centric, Diaspora-funded, mining-based economy which has averaged a measly 4%-5% per year.
It has been a lost decade, repeated three times.

This is the saddest video you will watch today. Russian pranksters trick Reza Pahlavi into believing they are representatives of German Chancellor Merz. Despite obvious flags - the unmistakable Russian accent, the representative's Hitler mustache, who also introduces himself as Adolf (!) - the man who wants Trump to install him as Shah in Iran, cluelessly falls for it.

But it gets worse: The "German" representative announces that Germany will start bombing Iran together with Israel and the US (this was days before the war started), and an elated Pahlavi welcomes it and says that it is important that the US and Israel are not isolated in conducting this "crusade."

Yes, Pahlavi approvingly calls the Israeli-US war on Iran a crusade...
