When we prioritize physical characteristics such as athleticism, wingspan, height & body type, but don’t see the intangibles such as love of the game, competitiveness, motor, IQ & ability to adapt, we’re shortchanging athletes. The intangibles often outweigh any physical traits.
COACHES: Treat your athletes with respect, dignity, and empathy even when they do not return the favor, or they act immature, or they cost you a win. Be the adult. Be the positive leader. Be the example. Be one of the reasons they become a good adult one day.
Leadership is Easy, Until…
Until you have to hold someone accountable.
Until you face criticism for doing the right thing.
Until you have to make a tough decision with no easy answer.
Until you take the blame for a mistake you didn’t make.
Until you have to lead people who don’t want to be led.
Until you’re expected to stay calm when everything is falling apart.
Until you have to sacrifice for the good of the team.
Leadership isn’t about a title. It’s about showing up when it’s hard.
That’s when real leaders stand out.
Choose to lead.
LSU’s “Pistol” Pete Maravich is NCAA’s all-time leading scorer w/3,667 career pts (44.2 ppg) in 3 years (freshmen ineligible) without a 3pt line.
Researchers who watched game film say w/3pt Maravich would’ve averaged 57 pts & 12 threes per game
How is this even possible?

"Teams that underachieve usually have poor player leadership."
Talent always sets the floor for a team.
What determines the ceiling?
1. Player Leadership
2. Team Culture

It’s not about what you do; it’s about how you do it. Every team runs drills, lifts weights, and puts in the hours.
That’s not special—that’s the baseline.
What separates champions from contenders isn’t the work itself; it’s the standard of that work.
Nick Saban said, "To be a good player on your team, you have to affect someone else on the team. You have to cause them to play better by the way you play."
The best players make their teammates better.
