A former Edmonton Catholic high school teacher has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the country to evade child pornography charges.

Jimmy Buena, who taught at St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School in west Edmonton, was arrested at Edmonton International Airport on April 15, 2026, nearly a year after the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams issued a warrant for his arrest in June 2025.

Buena faces charges of making, accessing, possessing, and transmitting child pornography. Investigators previously alleged he distributed child sexual abuse materials using Facebook and believed he had left for the Philippines after a warrant was issued. ALERT confirmed he has since been released from custody and is not facing any additional charges related to fleeing at this time.

A Canadian-born person does not lose their citizenship simply because their province leaves Confederation. Canadian law protects citizenship by birth on Canadian soil.

Most Albertans have deep family, cultural, and economic connections across Canada. None of those ties will be broken because of independence.
