#NextSG | The #Trump administration opposes all of the current crop of contenders to lead the United Nations — saying that none of them are sufficiently on board with the President’s worldview and desire for drastic changes to the body. https://t.co/9AocSF1DS2
Is the United Nations meeting its potential? As world leaders gather for the United Nations General Assembly this week, CFR President @MikeFroman argues that the organization is falling short.
“When you look at all the wars and conflicts around the world, the answer has to be no,” Froman said. He describes the United Nations as “a tale of two institutions”—one a gridlocked political body, and the other a network of agencies doing “real, important work in the field.”
Negotiation theory and practice have long been guided by the assumption that negotiators should seek the best possible outcome. Yet negotiators often stop short of what they could attain.

"The UN may not be in emergency care like it was last year, but it seems to be trapped in a trauma centre for the foreseeable future," I tell @Reuters. https://t.co/LREBoo2vg2
Michelle Bachelet leaves the UNSG race. She has been discussed as a UN leader for at least 20 years. It was not to be.
But (1) if you have been president twice and run 2 UN offices, that's not a shabby CV and (2) some other candidates should do the same.

The theme of #UNGA81 is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
I asked Gemini for alternatives based on ABBA songs, and I just hope @UN_PGA has time for a rethink.
"However the next U.N. chief plays their hand, it is likely that we will look back on Guterres as the last secretary-general to try to turn expansive post-Cold War visions of international solidarity into reality. The new occupant of the secretary-general's suite atop U.N. headquarters in New York will start from the reality that the world is divided." Smart from @RichardGowan1, the dean of all things September (but definitely UNGA). https://t.co/CXVry238BK
#NextUNSG | Some UN officials worry that the #Trump administration could push #Guterres’ successor to follow an even more restrictive agenda, not only cutting back the organization financially but also distancing it from principles such as gender equality and diversity. https://t.co/iV3WRFuAPC
“I really think there should be some sort of psychiatric test for wanting this position,” said Richard Gowan, global issues and institutions director at the International Crisis Group (ICG).

The big picture:
Any analyst examining the Sahel today and the expansion of Russian influence, the growth of terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram and JNIM, and the demographic and economic indicators of North Africa will see what is about to unfold.
A larger migration crisis at this point is not a question of if but when. For the moment, each episode can be presented as a dispute between Morocco and another country with conspiracy theories about why and how but there is a huge pressure on NATO South that people should keep in mind.
Problems on Europe’s external borders will persist, problems on North African countries who also are now destinations for migrants will also persist, and every weakness the EU displays through mass regularization programs, weak return policies, inconsistent border enforcement, or signals that irregular entry will ultimately be rewarded will invite exploitation by smugglers, hostile states, and ideological networks seeking to deepen political divisions across both shores of the Mediterranean.
