I commemorate Armistice Day because my family served. It's a part of my reality, my cultural identity and I have no problem with commemorating WW1 and WW2, just wars.

I was born in Cannock, England so like anyone born anywhere, they are shaped by their environment, their family and their experiences.

You're from Stoke ( I'm guessing?) so we have many similar cultural realities.

But I guarantee you that if you or I were born in the Bogside, Derry and your Brother, Sister, Mum or Dad were executed unlawfully during Bloody Sunday, or by paramilitaries from "the other side", or were treated as second class citizens in our own land, you may not be tweeting me tonight with this question.

Many Celtic supporters ( there are many who observe the silence, have served also, etc) visceral hatred of the Poppy is their direct and clear elaboration of the wrongs inflicted on "their" people over generations, from An Gorta Mor to the diaspora communities of the US, Australia, England and Scotland. Not for 1 minute of every year, but for several hundred years.

So do I agree with booing or disturbing the silence. No, because to me it's a sacred minute. I am literally thinking about my Grandad, in a trench, knee deep in mud in France.

But do I understand those Celtic fans ( or any other communities globally who've been put in similar positions) who, in their eyes, in their reality, in their experience see the poppy as a direct link to second class citizen status and Bloody Sunday, which has only very recently been acknowledged as a crime ? Yes, I understand.

And I think that makes me a better person for it. It means I can see and empathise with the two sides of a story.

As for Celtic supporters who won't stay silent, that is their choice, we live in a country where freedom to do things we don't like or hear that isn't illegal, is a beautiful thing. The far right are champions of absolute free speech so if that's what you believe then you have to apply that to everyone, all of the time.
