Chaman Lal died at the age of 100+ still waiting for justice.
In 1993, his 20-year-old son, Gulshan Kumar, was abducted by Punjab Police, tortured, killed in a staged encounter, and secretly cremated as an "unclaimed" body.
Chaman Lal witnessed the aftermath and spent more than two decades fighting for accountability.
His case became part of the wider Punjab mass cremations investigation exposed by Jaswant Singh Khalra. Acting on Khalra's documentation, the Supreme Court ordered a CBI investigation, which confirmed thousands of illegal cremations and described the findings as evidence of "flagrant violations of human rights on a mass scale." Yet, after years of legal delays, many families
—including Chaman Lal's—were left without justice.
Chaman Lal passed away just two days before the criminal proceedings in his case were due to resume. His life stands as a powerful reminder that delayed justice is too often justice denied-and that the pursuit of truth does not end with those who refuse to give up.
