A stationary front will combine with strong instability and moderate shear to develop scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Initial supercells will pose a severe wind and hail threat before merging into line segments driven by damaging winds, some of which could exceed 75mph.

A MODERATE RISK of excessive rainfall is in place today across parts of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, where a painfully slow-moving cold front will act as a boundary for training thunderstorms, bringing continuous rounds of heavy rain. The Hampton Roads metro is at greatest risk, where widespread totals exceeding 3" and persistent downpours over urban environments will drive a significant flash flood threat today into tonight.

That Colorado high country setup I mentioned this morning got a bump up to Level 3 of 5.

Storms fire off the mountains this afternoon, then clump together and bow out with the strongest wind gusts on the northeast Colorado and northwest Kansas plains. Around Colby, KS the rough stretch runs 4 PM to midnight, peaking near 7.

HOLY CRAP! A storm in South Dakota is producing winds up to 131 miles per hour. That is nearly the equivalent of an EF3 tornado (136mph) That is absolutely ridiculous.

This also includes lemon sized hail, which will produce devastating property and crop damage at wind speeds like this. If you know anyone in the path of this, tell them to stay weather aware. The storm is just southwest of Aberdeen, South Dakota.
