Lee Kuan Yew literally warned SIA about Air India more than 20 years ago.

Back in 2001, SIA and Tata tried to buy into Air India. LKY’s view was that there were simply too many vested interests- inside Air India, the government, civil aviation and the ministries - and SIA would face resistance “all down the line.”

His point was basically: Delhi can say yes, then you still have to deal with the state, then the local authority, then another layer of bureaucracy.

He reportedly thought the better option was to let Air India “die naturally” rather than try to fix the institution.

SIA eventually walked away.

Fast forward 25 years: SIA is back, now owning 25% of Air India. And Air India is seeking another US$1.5 billion from Tata and SIA.

Ah Gong did warn us. 😂
