It’s bittersweet to share that we’ve sold BeraBucks.

When we started NYXL, our goal was to bring esports to New York and build something meaningful around the ATVI leagues. But for a number of reasons — the leagues never fully regained their footing after covid, which pushed us to consider a pivot. That challenge led us to apply what we’d learned about building gaming communities to web3 gaming, which became BeraBucks.

BeraBucks aimed to create a new kind of gamer ad network. Most web3 games have struggled to onboard U.S. gamers — still the most valuable audience in the world — while esports teams have struggled to capture game marketing dollars, a missed opportunity that could unlock massive revenue. We saw an opportunity to bridge that gap and successfully partnered with some of the largest esports teams, creating the largest network of US based gamers in web3.

Unfortunately, just as we were ready to scale our acquisition and marketing efforts this year, many of the games we worked with either shut down or significantly reduced their marketing spend. Given those shifts, we decided the best path forward was to find a new home for the team and tech.

I still deeply believe in web3 gaming. Despite its fair share of low-quality projects and short-term extraction, the underlying model has the potential to truly empower gamers and studios — through new revenue models and lower acquisition costs. I’m hopeful for the builders that are still creating great games, and for new studios to be inspired to experiment, at min exploring stablecoins as a starting point.

Now that we’ve sold, the NYXL / BeraBucks chapter officially comes to a close. It’s been eight years of chaos, learning, and incredible friendships — an experience I’ll always cherish. Excited (and a little nervous) for whatever comes next.

After careful consideration, we've made the decision to wind down the BeraBucks loyalty program. Season 2 won't be launching, and the rewards platform you've engaged with will be coming to a close.

We launched this program with a range of objectives, but the main one was to help onboard gamers en masse into web3 gaming. We built one of the largest distribution channels out there with best-in-class gaming organizations like @100Thieves @Cloud9 and @Tribe. However, the web3 gaming ecosystem has not been ready to kick off acquisition, causing us to sunset this initiative.

Here's what's next: The technology we developed is moving to where it can make a big impact. Our AI-powered tools are joining @Zerg_AI, and a portion of our tech and team are moving to a stealth AI-powered loyalty and commerce company. Each will be with specialized teams focused entirely on taking these innovations further than we could alone.

While we didn’t accomplish what we set out to do in web3 gaming, we’re nonetheless proud of what we built together and grateful for your support along the way.
