Big SUVs now get tiny turbo engines to meet emissions rules. On paper, they’re cleaner. But in practice, they may last 50× less than old V6s. If you need 2 cars in 20 years instead of 1, the extra manufacturing & materials can easily outweigh the tailpipe emissions benefit. 1/4
@rollo75 Mazda 2 is good. Small, yet reliable engine. My point is not about those. For cross country trips or offroading people need more capable engines. Putting small engine for those kind of vehicles might emit less CO2 on paper, but that doesn’t make them more sustainable in practice
Manufacturers are forced to meet CO₂ rules, so they downsize and add turbos. That works for their fleet average, but not necessarily for owners who want long-life, heavy-use SUVs. My point: emissions numbers ≠ total environmental impact. Durability matters just as much. 4/4
Lifecycle emissions include manufacturing the car, engine, exhaust, batteries, and disposal. If the engine dies early and you buy a second vehicle, those hidden emissions can completely erase the upfront tailpipe savings regulators care about. 3/4
@Noahpinion Kazakhs always had high birth rates. Lower birth rates in 80-90s were because of their small population share, around 35-40%. Later their gov encouraged ethnic kazakhs in other Central Asian states to return. Which increased the share of Kazakhs and demographics shifted.
@VisualCap@Hinrich Bigness is deceptive. 🇮🇳 is 3rd largest economy. But 45% of Indians are trapped in agriculture contributing 16% to GDP. You cant project global weight when half your workforce are in a low-productivity struggle. To call India alternative to China’s is frankly naive.
