@Ayo1457963@KillingRoofed@Officially_wilz@Dexerto I think a large proportion of the people who eat pigs but are horrified by the thought of eating dogs justify this cognitively dissonant position on moral grounds.
@Ayo1457963@KillingRoofed@Officially_wilz@Dexerto Cultural conditioning is a valid reason why you might feel it's fine to eat one and not the other, but it doesn't change the fact that morally there is no difference.
@KillingRoofed@Officially_wilz@Dexerto It's cultural conditioning, not ethics, that makes one okay and the other not. There is no valid moral distinction between eating a pig and eating a dog.
@bannister_jimbo@sumJsum@rahmstorf It's a striking correlation for sure but over a very short time frame, and of course correlation does not equal causation. This is one I will continue to watch as more data is gathered.
I appreciate you taking the time to discuss this. We clearly see the science differently, but I think we can agree that alarmist messaging tends to do more harm than good. Better to focus on what the data actually shows, discuss it robustly and and consider practical responses to it. Thanks for the exchange
No. The report states that a horrifically large number of children have been abused over a long period of time. The original poster then used bad statistics to calculate that this amounts to 6% of all girls. That's incorrect and sensationalist. There is no need to sensationalise this report. It's truly horrific when correctly interpreted. Miss interpreting it in this way just gives those who would like to discredit it ammunition to do so.
With respect, my understanding is that both convection and radiation shape our atmosphere. Greenhouse gases absorb and reemit longwave radiation, which raises the effective emission altitude and warms the surface by roughly 33 C compared against planets without them. Satellite measurements, eg those analysed in Harries et al. (2001), show clear reductions in outgoing longwave radiation within CO2 absorption bands as concentrations rise. Total broadband OLR does increase with surface warming to restore energy balance, consistent with these processes
@bannister_jimbo@sumJsum@rahmstorf The lapse rate. Pump up a bicycle tyre quickly and the valve gets hot, compression heats the air. Rising air does the reverse: it expands in the lower pressure near the summit and cools. CO2 warms the surface overall, itβs a separate mechanism.
@ilkkah@Rothmus So you just asked AI rather than looking at the actual report then? The 250,000 estimate is since the 1950s as per the executive summary, page 6 https://t.co/WnpnT3D1xJ
I'm no fan of alarmism myself, but having studied this subject much further than GCSE level I also reject denialist claims such as this. There is a strong scientific basis for the greenhouse effect. The physics of radiative transfer shows that greenhouse gases absorb and re emit infrared radiation, trapping heat and raising Earth's surface temperature by approximately 33 C above the effective radiating temperature it would have without an atmosphere. This is confirmed by laboratory measurements, satellite observations of Earths energy budget and outgoing radiation spectra, and comparisons across planets and moons. While total atmospheric pressure influences the vertical temperature profile (via the lapse rate) and slightly enhances absorption through line broadening, it does not supplant or negate the central role of IR absorption by gases such as water vapour and CO2. Claims that reduce the entire effect to pressure and solar enhancement alone overlook these fundamental radiative processes and energy balance constraints
@sumJsum@bannister_jimbo@rahmstorf No need to over complicate it. Its easy to get a basic understanding of the mechanisms at play here even from GCSE level science. Deeper study only corroborates.
I do energy efficiency calculations to demonstrate compliance with building regs part L for new builds. This should be done initially at design stage then re-run on completion. I'm constantly amazed by the amount of clients who come to me days before final signoff for these calcs. Of course in cases where the calcs show non compliance and structural changes are required they often act like this is my fault!
Well said, I couldn't agree more. We have serious issues in this country arising from the lack of integration of various communities, but the Sikhs are one of the shining examples of integration working. Diversity is a great strength when integration has occurred and a great risk and weaknesses where it has not. This needs to be urgently addressed, but please don't tar the wonderful Sikhs with the same brush as the several other (largely) self segregated immigrant communities that are responsible for so many societal issues today.
@GrandlagoonPCB9@BROKENBRITAIN0 I think the confusion for lots here is that in the UK paddling means walking in shallow water, you would say wading in the US I guess
The beach shelves. It consists of flat 'terraces' with sudden drops from one to the next. The tidal range is huge, so its very easy to see how someone can go from paddling in knee deep water to being far out of their depth in a couple of steps. Its also worth noting that the beach gets reshaped by every storm so the position of these steps constantly changes throughout the year. An absolute tragedy, and one that it is easy to see how happened if you know the area.
