Incredible. As websites become browsed more by AI than humans, one has to wonder if the ways we interface with the web today will be abstracted away completely. In the past 180 days, I have made 3038 queries to ChatGPT and 450 queries to Anthropic. In that same time period, according to my search history, I utilized Google search 4251 times. Think about how many queries were shifted from "search," to "chat" where ongoing conversation and elaboration is possible... and shared collaboration and creation is possible with the AI. With my doctoral students, 95% of our literature review work begins in chat... only going to search when we can't find a good link for an article. Wild. Doc students aside: Think a little about that... and think about how different the world might look in the coming two-or-so years. (Chat walked me through every step of cooking smoked ribs today.) I'll share my stats again near year's end. In so many measures, we are living in exciting times.

Many moons ago on this day, I submitted chapters 1-3 of my dissertation to my chair. I sent it via FedEx Overnight with some chocolates and a red pen. I figured it would be seen and addressed faster this way than via email. In the week’s wait in between getting feedback, I finished my ethics (IRB) application. Within a few weeks I was collecting data. A profound lesson that summer was “If I don’t finish this thing now, I may never finish,” and the focus that this allowed. These many years later, I am so thankful for that version of me that was “with it” enough to read, read, read….
