Moussa Abadi, from Damascus, saved 527 Jewish children from the Nazis with his wife and Christian clergy in southern France. I had the honour of speaking with some of them for this piece ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day.

📢Alarming: There are numerous reports that security forces are going from hospital to hospital, killing patients deemed to be protesters or showing signs of gunshot wounds.
A message from a doctor in Tehran:
“It feels like hell. So many protesters are wounded, but their families are too afraid to take them to hospitals because the Islamic Republic arrests the injured. We don’t have the resources to treat them at home. Without proper care, they will die. When will the world help us? When every Iranian has died?”

At least 12,000 people were killed in the largest killing in Iran’s contemporary history, carried out largely over two consecutive nights on January 8 and 9, Iran International’s editorial board concluded, based on a review of sources and medical data.
Iran is under a coordinated blackout aimed not only at security control but at concealing the truth, reflected in internet cuts, crippled communications, media shutdowns, and the intimidation of journalists and witnesses.
Publication was delayed until the evidence converged.
The assessment is based on a multi-stage review of information from a source close to the Supreme National Security Council; two sources in the presidential office; accounts from several sources within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Mashhad, Kermanshah and Isfahan; testimonies from eyewitnesses and families of those killed; field reports; data linked to medical centers; and information provided by doctors and nurses in multiple cities.

The accounts of massacre in Iran is beyond horrifying.
A friend spoke to a number of people in Isfahan who said they could hear people dying in the alleyways. One witnessed blood stains all over the city’s streets and walls. “The situation is far far worse than what we see in limited videos.”
Horrific photos and videos coming out of Iran.
Hearing from sources with expertise in Iran human rights documentation that the 12,000 number is credible.
This is the Syria playbook...
Bashar Al Assad crushed the Syrian people with mass killings as they rose up for freedom.
This was also a regular form of brutality used by the IRGC during the Women, Life, Freedom protests. I spoke to many protesters who had been blinded, and then were forced to flee hospital wards when the IRGC came to arrest them from their beds.
Nazli Janparvar, a citizen from Bojnord, was shot dead by direct gunfire from Islamic Republic security forces on January 8, 2026. @POTUS#DigitalBlackoutIran#IranMassacr
Mansoureh Heydari, a nurse and her husband Behrouz Mansouri, parents of a 5 and 10-year-old who could no longer bear the suffocating injustice. After work, they entrusted their children to family, kissed them goodbye, and joined the protest with the fire of exhausted hope in their hearts. They never came home.

Yasin Mirzaei, a student at the University of Messina in Italy, killed during protests in Kermanshah
This image shows Yasin Mirzaei, a Kurdish man and a follower of the Yarsan faith, whom Hengaw had previously reported was killed on the evening of January 8, 2026, during popular protests in the Dareh Deraz neighborhood of Kermanshah (Kermashan), after being shot by forces of the Nabi Akram IRGC unit. He was a student at the University of Messina in Italy.
A few hours after the Islamic Republic imposed a complete and targeted internet shutdown across Iran, Hengaw was able to re-establish contact with Kermanshah through its sources and verified and published the names of five people killed in the city.

Among those who may be at risk of execution is protester Erfan Soltani, a 26-year-old man from Alborz province. Reports indicate Iranian authorities might execute him as early as 14 January. 3/5
🚨🇮🇷 "AT THE TIME OF HANDING OVER THE BODIES, THEY WERE SAYING 'DEATH TO KHAMENEI'"
This is from families collecting bodies of protesters killed by security forces.
Not at a rally. At a government building. While facing the same people who just killed your son or daughter.
And you're still chanting.
That's when fear stops working.
Regimes rely on people calculating risk. Speak out, get arrested. Protest, get shot. The math is supposed to keep most people quiet most of the time.
This is the moment repression starts failing. Not because it's not brutal enough.
Because it's already done the worst thing and people are still going.

"Shut the embassies, freeze the assets and put the IRGC on the terrorist list. If you do that, the regime is isolated."

Just think about it for a second. These protestors know that security forces will shoot at them. They know they might die and they are still out there in the streets protesting. Courage is an understatement #Iran
In the 1990s, Iran's Ministry of Intelligence murdered numbers of writers, poets & activists to crush free speech. Brutal stabbings, poisonings, staged accidents. Among victims: poet Hamid Hajizadeh & his 9yo son Karoun, stabbed 27 & 10 times in their home (1998). Regime called it a “mistake,”

I interviewed some of the #Israel'i soldiers who are refusing to fight, as they see no point in continuing a war that is failing to return the hostages and killing tens of thousands of innocent people. For @TheNationalNews https://t.co/HnwEQI3lh3
