A man browses for books in the old Public Library of Cincinnati. The building was demolished in 1955. Today, an office building and a parking lot stand where it used to be.

The Old Cincinnati Library was built in 1874 on the site reserved for an opera house. With five levels of cast iron shelving, a fabulous foyer, checkerboard marble floors, and an atrium lit by a skylight ceiling, the place was considered a great architectural work. The cost of the lot and building was $383,594.53, about $7.7 million today. The Public Library contained 60,000 volumes, with an estimated capacity of 300,000.

The reasons why the building was demolished were poor ventilation, stuffy air, peeling paint, and at a certain point, the book collection had started to outgrow the building, and books were stacked beyond reach.
