RIP to USMC Cpl. John Kinsel Sr. He passed away at the age of 107. He was one of the last 3 remaining Navajo Code Talkers and served with the 9th Marine Regiment & 3rd Marine Division during the taking of Iwo Jima. Enjoy your rest Marine 🇺🇸 🫡

#OTD in 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima, the bloodiest battle in #MarineCorps history began.

From Feb. 19 to Mar. 26, over 80,000 Marines and @USNavy Sailors from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions grappled with tenacious Japanese defenders dug into Iwo Jima’s volcanic terrain.

Enemy forces proved tough as they swept the island’s beaches with concentrated fire, but within a few days the Marines captured Mount Suribachi, and four weeks later victory was declared in Iwo Jima.

Today, the image of six #Marines raising an American flag on Mount Suribachi’s summit is immortalized as a symbol of hope and heroism for all Americans.
