Manufacturers were given TWO YEARS to sort out their packaging and processes to comply with folic acid mandate in December.

They are admitting to breaking the law and adding folic acid without proper labelling.

What was the point of the TWO YEARS if they are going to do that?

I have just taken Warburtons to task over one of their bread products - their view is that they have been granted until the end of 2026 to update packaging to reflect the use of folic acid in their products. "As we order and print new packaging, folic acid will be clearly listed as part of the wheat flour ingredient on our labels". They are mistaken in their belief that this is acceptable.

There is no exemption in relation to food labelling. Flour, containing folic acid has to be used in products from the end of 2026 but manufacturers that have chosen to use flour containing folic acid before that date must ensure that their labelling reflects the ingredients of the product.

Practical implementation and labelling changes
The technical changes and updated enforcement provisions that have been made are now mostly in effect. The folic acid addition provision will come fully into force on 13 December 2026 however this applies to the compositional change being made only, there is no transition period for amending product labels.

Food labelling requirements in the UK and EU fall under the remit of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers (FIC). This Regulation requires that all ingredients in a product are listed on the label in descending order of the weight of each ingredient allowing consumers to make an informed decision based on accurate information when choosing the foods they will consume. Once the new flour with the added folic acid is in use, action is necessary to amend the labelling and packaging of all non-wholemeal flour sold, as well as finished products where the flour is used as an ingredient to reflect the addition of folic acid”.

Labelling Requirements
Added folic acid must be clearly listed in the ingredients. When fortified flour is used as a compound ingredient, it typically appears as: Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin, Folic Acid) (or similar ordering, following descending weight rules, with added nutrients often at the end if <2%).

Food manufacturers using the flour are responsible for updating labels on their products to accurately reflect this. There is no extended transition period specifically for labelling beyond the compositional deadline - labels should be updated as soon as fortified flour is used.

In June 2023 he explicitly ruled out ever indulging in a resignation honours list (BBC Radio 4 Today).
Today he’s marked his resignation with 21 peerages, overwhelmingly public-sector/legal jobsworths. Barely a single wealth creator among them.
Classic line up of the New Establishment which has run the country under Labour and Tory governments for the past three decades and is now firmly in control. Largely (if not entirely) with the following characteristics:
*Career almost entirely in public sector, often taking salaries from several sinecures at once as they work up the greasy taxpayer-funded pole.
*Associated with various ‘right-on’ causes.
*Largely middle class, London chattering class, Oxbridge well represented (of course).
*Fashionable left but not too left. Good mainstream Labour links.
Thus is the antediluvian House of Lords perpetuated by the Left as well as the Right as a comfortable state-funded retirement home for the well-connected ‘good and great’ past their sell-by date — when it should simply be abolished.

I am having a drink this evening with a friend in a Chiswick pub. Two policemen have just come into the pub and asked me to step outside. I have stepped outside and they have threatened me because I tweeted about a councillor banning seating outside pubs in Chiswick. They admit on video (watch it!) that I did not break the law at all. They came to threaten me. To warn me off tweeting about councillors and the council. This is modern Britain. This is the police state. Please, please, please watch this video. It does involve me using very bad language, but this has got to be seen. Police coming out to threaten someone who hasn’t committed a crime. I’m fuming.
