Overlooked reason for the literacy crisis is that media has stopped pushing reading entirely. As recently as the 1990s books were at the center of culture. As kids it was drilled into us that to be successful, you had to read. We need a national campaign to make kids read again.
I miss people geeking out on books. In high school people read Shogun and the Stand. In high school (90s obviously) we would read Nietzsche and Aristotle and Aquinas, etc. and talk about it. Maybe we were being pretentious, but everyone did it. That NEVER happens anymore, literally never.
