Last yr, I told a friend I wanted to do a story on NK perspectives on SK-fashion. If only there were a fashion designer to interview. Little did I know, Jihyun was conceptualizing this ATST. Grateful to @VVFriedman! One intl call made all the difference.

When I was young, my feminist mom didn’t let me watch kdramas and I’ve been wanting to write about how much they’ve changed since 2019. Thank you to @intifada69 & @etammykim/ @ttsgpod’s 우영우 episode!
Gendered tropes that once dominated the genre are slowly falling out of favor. In their place are strong female protagonists challenging the status quo.

I graduate this summer, so I spoke with lots of international students to figure out how to land a journalism job in the US. Turns out interviews often end when recruiters find out candidates will need visa sponsorship. Offers have been rescinded. 🧵

@hanbae Oh! I completely understand. Hodu did this and I was wrecked with anxiety. I researched tons and it goes well 99%/time - only 0.2 chance something goes wrong is due to other health factors (or something!) Hodu was great and I’m sure Ramona will be too! Big hugs for both of you!
I’ve been thinking about my time at Seoul Tourism, trying to convince those in charge that nightlife exists and people go out to bars and clubs. There is a huge culture gap and govt orgs do not want to legitimize “going out” esp to places like itaewon.
I was flooded with tears bc a 16y/o high school student I know was in itaewon and messaged me this morning to say he got out safe but was so scared bc of all the bodies he saw. I can’t imagine being a parent waiting for their kid now.
My dog and I attended a free training course hosted by the government. Another lady told me she signed up for at-home training and the certified trainer came to her house for a customized class!
I read dozens of Jeong Kwan interviews before writing this for BMW’s print mag. Most make her out to be something she’s not, but here she’s honest about Buddhist food, being in the right place at the right time, enjoying insta and valuing ₩. It was fun!
@etammykim I’ve also been wondering about this. With the rents as things are, it’s really hard to find a decent living space especially if you’re a family. Also 반지하 and 1층 are often ubiquitous bc many first floors are essentially slightly underground. 🤔
@jacobin @adejuthompson Hi Adeju! I’m a reporter for the New York Times and I’m hoping to talk to you for a piece I’m writing. Could you please check your DMs? Sometimes it filters out messages. Thank you!
Hm. My dad is a terrible person and him leaving was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I’m okay and if you’re a person without a dad this father’s day, that’s okay, too! :)
in 2013, my friends and I spontaneously decided to visit. They left a few hours after me and later told me he took them to the bus, paid for their tickets and gave them spending money. I can see him waving off their thank yous and his silent, but warm goodbye.
Today, my grandfather passed away. I hadn’t been in touch and bc of family complications, I can’t speak to anyone else who knew him. He was a rigid man. A history professor, a stricter father. Everyone feared him except for his grandchildren. This is my favorite photo of him.
