When Sattar Khan (d. 1914), the Azeri-Iranian revolutionary, was asked to give up and raise the white flag of surrender, he responded:
"I am under the flag of Abu'l-Fadl al-‘Abbas, I will not [surrender] and go under the flag of anyone else!"
"من زیر بیرق ابوالفضلِ عبّاسم،
زیر بیرقِ هیچکسِ دیگر نمیرم!"
- ستارخان
Abu'l-Fadl al-‘Abbas was the standard-bearer of Imam Husayn and his younger half-brother. In his legend, it is said that he lost both his arms during his furious charge at the battle of Karbala, yet he did not allow the banner of righteousness to fall. He knew death was certain, and he ecstatically sought it.
For this reason, flags raised in his name have become rallying points for the downtrodden, a source of strength and power for them. As long as his flag flies, the oppressors will be challenged and the movement will live on.

The world needs to understand that Shiʿism is a movement that thrives when faced with certain death. This is the innate power of this ideological tradition: the more it is threatened and oppressed, the stronger it becomes. The core of its philosophy is Karbala, and that is the paradigm it ultimately returns to.
Shiʿism is not concerned with conquering territories, it is not impressed with the stories of Khalid and military expansion that Sunnis grow up with; rather, it is animated by an intense longing for a glorious, sacrificial death in the path of truth, as the family of the Prophet and their tiny band of supporters experienced at Karbala.
Many may consider this delusional, and perhaps it is, but it is nevertheless a reality that must be understood on the world stage.
One of the primary reasons that the 'Abbasids imprisoned Imām Mūsā al-Kāẓim (d. 183/799) was that they felt threatened by his generosity; believing it would swing public support in the direction of the 'Alids.
Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī (d. 463/1071) mentions that the Imām's generosity was so great that it became a proverb:
اذا جاءت الانسان صرة فقد استغنى
"Whenever a person receives a pouch* of coins [from Mūsā al-Kāẓim] he [forever] becomes needless"
(The term صرة (wallet, pouch) is also used to describe the historic donations sent to Mecca and Madinah, the صرة الحرمين)

The narrator says: "when the Prince [of Believers] turned his face towards the battlefield, he called out for a warrior to step forward and duel him.
'Umar, son of Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas cried out: "O men, know that you cannot face [Husayn] in singular combat, [however] he is thirsty and nearing death, so instead attack him [altogether]!"
The Umayyad army jumped from their positions and enveloped Husayn from all sides, the Master of Martyrs, like a ferocious lion - wielding a razor sharp sword, dived straight into their ranks, thunderously bellowing "I am the son of Rasul Allah!" such that the very pillars of the earth began to tremble.
The lightning flashes of his sword confounded the eyes of the enemies, turning their hopeful faces into ones filled with panic. From the cloud of dust that erupted towards the sky, blood [of the Umayyad army] rained downwards…"

The Moon of Bani Hashim's fateful charge attempting to bring water back for the thirsty grandchildren of the Prophet (s).
Mulla Kashifi writes:
"ʿAbbas cast his spear into the water, drew his sword, and drove forward from the river’s edge, launching an attack so fierce that wherever he turned, the enemy scattered before him. He fought with unmatched bravery until he had cleared the riverbank of the opposing forces. Then he dismounted, filled the water-skin, and reached out to drink. But just as the water neared his lips, he remembered the thirst of Husayn, and the parched cries of the women and children of the Prophet’s household.
He alas threw the water aside, untasted, and mounted once more. Slinging the water-skin over his right shoulder, and turned back toward the camp..."
But history tells us, that the very idol of loyalty and chivalry, never made it back to the exalted camp of prophethood.
